Accelerating the Launch of New Battery Technologies Through Collaborative Partnership

To help companies accelerate the launch of new battery materials and technologies, Polaris Battery Labs, LLC, a prototyping and process development resource for lithium ion battery products, and Carestream Tollcoating have joined forces. The collaboration accelerates use of the capabilities of both companies for customers working on advanced battery and supercapacitor development activities.

Barrier Films for Enhanced Packaging

Barrier coatings are used to protect sensitive materials from oxygen or moisture that degrade long-term product performance. Recent advances in barrier technology include coatings that cost less than typical foil laminate and multilayer structures involving both liquid and vacuum coating. The goal is to produce coatings that can be applied to flexible materials with barrier properties comparable to glass.

Efficient online inspection and defect mapping saves labor and time and enables improved product quality while simultaneously moving down the cost curve. Process optimization and yield enhancement is a core capability of Tollcoating.  Some of the techniques are proprietary but we have shared an overview.

At Carestream Tollcoating, our experience with multilayer film coatings can be leveraged across a broad range of applications - from proofing films to display and battery components, cast films and filtration and electrochemical membranes, medical testing materials and more. This edition's "Services Spotlight" focuses on our coating services, which provide efficient scale-up from concept to production.

Coating methods employed at Carestream Tollcoating include traditional and highly modified slot die, roll, slide coating, gravure and curtain coating methods from multiple in line coating stations.  Laminating, corona discharge treatment, UV curing, and lamination are also available in line with coating. We offer aqueous and solvent solutions and routinely coat film, paper, foil and non-woven substrates in thicknesses from 0.5 to 15 mil and widths from 20 to 74 inches. Our production coaters run from 50 to 1,750 feet per minute for excellent economics.

Carestream Tollcoating provides customers with access to world-class roll to roll coating technology and manufacturing facilities, material science expertise, extensive analytical capabilities and process development. Advantages to customers include reduced cost to bring products to market through elimination of capital investment, and shorter commercialization times through rapid prototyping and expert troubleshooting in production of complex, multilayer coated web products.

Our coating facilities are located in Oregon, Colorado and New York.  Contact us anytime to discuss your project and our capabilities - we are here to help.
