Time is Running Out—Your Support Is Needed Now!

In just a few short months, our incredible President & CEO, Russell Snyder, will retire after 15 years of transformational leadership at Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas. To honor Russ’ legacy of hope and service, we’ve launched The Snyder Healthy Communities for All Campaign—and we need your help to make it a success!

The stakes couldn’t be higher.

Nonprofits across the nation, including VOA, are staring down a dangerous funding cliff. Recent federal budget cuts and legal uncertainties have left many organizations scrambling, with grants paused, contracts canceled, and futures hanging in the balance. For some, this means cutting staff, reducing services, or even closing their doors.

But we can’t let that happen—not when so many lives are at risk.

VOA is a lifeline for thousands of homeless and low-income men, women, and children. We are the cornerstone of strong, resilient communities, offering daily support and critical aid in times of crisis. Without immediate funding, our ability to provide these essential services is in jeopardy.

You have the power to make a difference.

By giving to The Snyder Healthy Communities for All Campaign, you can help us meet our $100,000 goal by June 30, 2025—and ensure Russ’ legacy of hope lives on. We’re off to a strong start with $7,500 raised so far, but we need your support to reach the finish line.

Yes! I want to keep hope alive.

Together, we can weather this storm and build healthier, more hopeful communities for all. Thank you for standing with us!

Herb's Story: From Heartbreak to Hope

Herb Lansdowne grew up in Reston, VA, with a heart for service that led him to enlist in the Army in 2004 at just 26 years old. During his six years of service—including deployments to Iraq—Herb forged unbreakable bonds with his fellow soldiers. Those friendships remain a source of strength for him to this day.

When Herb returned home, he was ready to build a new life. For a while, things seemed to be on track—until 2022, when life as he knew it unraveled.

That year, Herb faced unimaginable loss. He mourned the passing of his beloved mother, endured a painful separation from his longtime partner, and struggled with untreated sleep apnea that made holding down a job nearly impossible. As his health and stability crumbled, he lost his home and found himself struggling to survive.

Herb was sinking—until VOA reached out a hand.

Because of generous supporters like you, who believe that our nation’s heroes deserve more than just survival, Herb found a lifeline. VOA provided not only housing support and job assistance but also the compassion and encouragement he needed to rebuild his life.

“The team at VOA made me feel important. They didn’t just leave me to figure things out on my own—they kept checking in, offering help, and guiding me through the process.” – Herb

Today, Herb is thriving. He has a safe, comfortable place to call home and a job he loves with a local HVAC, plumbing, and electrical company. His story is proof that, with the right support, hope can rise from even the darkest of times.
