In August, we had the honor and privilege of participating in the Guthrie Village Groundbreaking Ceremony alongside our partners, the Durham Community Land Trustees (DCLT) in North Carolina. Guthrie Village represents an innovative approach to veteran housing, and will feature 1- to 2-bedroom homes constructed using modular shipping containers. So, cool!
As the future onsite supportive services provider at Guthrie Village, we are looking forward to helping residents in need achieve and maintain their long-term health and wellbeing.
Why are projects like this important?
According to the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development, out of the 7,200 Carolinians who experienced homelessness in 2023, more than 700 of them were veterans. It is not uncommon for veterans who returned home to find job opportunities that pay much less than they earned during their time of service. Physical injuries and mental health challenges that limit their ability to find and keep jobs that pay well adds to this challenge.
Veterans in need of housing assistance who meet certain criteria set by the Veterans Administration can qualify for affordable vouchers that make it easier for them to be placed into homes that fit their budget. However, there simply is not enough housing to meet the demand.
"The number of veterans facing homelessness continues be a problem for our communities at large. The work that DCLT has done and continues to do for the City of Durham and our nation's heroes is remarkable, refreshing and hopeful. We're grateful for DCLT's partnership on this innovative housing project that will help to address the affordable housing gap for veterans and their families."
