When Savvy was just 18 months old, she was diagnosed with a rare type of lung cancer.
She was treated at Arkansas Children’s Hospital where she went through extensive chemotherapy, radiation, and “too many surgeries to count”, including the removal of part of her lung.
When Savvy was 5 years old, her mother discovered Camp Quality Arkansas. Attending camp became one of the biggest blessings of her life.
“Once my first year ended, I could not wait to go back,” Savvy said. “I have attended camp every year since then and every year I would cry on my way home because I did not want to leave. At camp I created lifelong friendships and met so many amazing people who helped me come out of my shell.”
Savvy recently turned 19 and is currently a student at Arkansas State University where she is working on a degree in Medical Laboratory Technology. She hopes to eventually work at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
Savvy is also now a companion at Camp Quality Arkansas and said this past summer was a “full circle moment” for her.
“It was so surreal coming back as a companion after being a camper for so long,” Savvy said. “When I was younger, as a camper, I made a promise to myself that I would always come back, even if I ended up being on Staff, and I’m keeping that promise to myself!”
