NCCDP Chadwick/Brown Meritorious Service Award

By J. William "Bill" Claytor, DDS, MAGD

Executive Director, NCCDP

The North Carolina Caring Dental Professionals (NCCDP) is proud to announce the inaugural recipients of the newly established NCCDP Chadwick/Brown Meritorious Service Award. This distinguished honor recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service, dedication, and contributions to the advancement of dental professionals well-being in North Carolina.

Award recipients embody visionary leadership, unwavering commitment, and a profound passion for supporting the well-being of dentists and dental hygienists. Their longstanding service to the NCCDP and the broader dental community reflects the highest moral and ethical standards. They are inspirational figures—individuals of integrity who place the needs of others before their own and serve as beacons of knowledge, education, advocacy, and administrative excellence.

In December 2024, the NCCDP had the honor of presenting this award to two outstanding leaders in North Carolina dentistry: Dr. Greg Chadwick and Dr. Ben Brown. Both men have made lasting impacts on our profession through their exemplary dedication and leadership.

On behalf of the North Carolina dental community, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Drs. Chadwick and Brown for their enduring service and commitment, past, present, and future.

From Lauren Haarlow, Clinical Director, NCCDP

The last 16 months have been an incredible learning opportunity for me! Since becoming the Clinical Director at NCCDP over a year ago, I’ve been continually inspired by our participants and how they navigate their personal recovery and professional obligations. I’ve witnessed firsthand the positive impact of the NCCDP on the lives of dental practitioners and their families.

How Being in Recovery Has Changed Me and My Practice

By a Grateful Recovering Dentist

I began my journey in sobriety, lost. My relationships with family, friends, and work were in pieces. I had been spinning out of control and felt isolated and alone. The removal of alcohol from my life gave me a completely new perspective. I could think clearly and be present at all times. I was no longer in a rush or anxious and paranoid. I could think, feel, and appreciate the little things in life again. Life was no longer terrifying and depressing, it was exciting and full of opportunity to connect with others and be happy.

As I continued in recovery, I began to value time and conversation more. It allowed me to spend more quality time with my family while I was completely present. They could see it, and they loved it. My family was more expressive to me and shared more. They wanted me with them more. We reconnected in ways I never thought possible again, sometimes through deep conversation, sometimes just going for a walk and being close to one another.

How Being in Recovery has Changed My Relationships and My Practice

By Another Grateful Alcoholic

in Recovery

My relationships have changed because I have changed. Being in recovery has changed the way I think, the way I feel and the way I respond to life; therefore, the way I think and feel and respond in relationships has changed. Thanks to Divine Intervention I am living in harmony with others. I am in a spiritually connected place and spiritual growth, to me, is really about eliminating the domination of self and embracing the leadership and blessings of God’s spirit.

Eight years ago, my life took a pivotal turn when I recommitted myself to sobriety after a brief but jarring relapse. For 15 years prior, I had maintained sobriety, but I drifted from the practices that kept me grounded.

Applying Spiritual Principles From Recovery To The Workplace

By a Grateful Recovering Dental Hygienist

I wish I could tell you that my ten years in recovery has made work a place of utopia. I could, but that would be misleading. What I can say is that the spiritual principles I gained from being in recovery and choosing to remain free from mood and mind altering substances one day at a time has given me skills to deal with difficult workplace situations more tolerably.

After all, we are health care providers and deal with different personality styles all day. I can have three patients that come in for their appointment with smiles on their face, singing my praises and four more that want me to “just hurry up and get me out of here” spirits.

My New Life

By a Grateful Recovering Hygienist living a full life

My name is Jessica and I’m a recovered alcoholic and addict. My sobriety date is February 8th 2020. I’ll speak briefly about my past and then speak on how it is Today!

I was blessed to grow up in a loving, wholesome community. I give thanks to my mother, aunt, and grandmother for laying a sturdy foundation in the church. Ultimately, that’s what led me back home from a road of misery.

I started to drink and do drugs when I was in college. In the beginning it was controllable, or so I thought.
