Caring for Caregivers: Celebrating Social Work Month

During the transplant process, families are often navigating a world filled with uncertainty. Patients and caregivers frequently travel from out of town, arriving in an unfamiliar place with little time to prepare due to the urgent nature of transplant care. Amid these unknowns, caregivers are balancing immense responsibility–supporting their loved one through surgery and recovery while also trying to process what comes next. It can be overwhelming, isolating, and emotionally complex.

Caregivers often spend long days at their loved one’s bedside, and even stepping away for a moment can bring feelings of guilt. Alongside stress and exhaustion, many carry emotions that are difficult to name–feelings best understood by those who have experienced this journey themselves. At the hospital, social workers play an essential role in evaluating patients and providing follow-up care. Beyond the clinical setting, that support continues in a different but equally meaningful way. Jennifer Pinsenbarger, our Social Work Manager, offers caregivers a steady, compassionate presence by checking in regularly, without judgement, connecting them with others who have walked a similar path, and helping them access the resources they need.

March is Social Work Month, and at Transplant House, we are proud to recognize and celebrate the vital role social workers play in supporting our community. In moments of uncertainty, their work brings connection, comfort, and peace of mind to caregivers and their families.

Happenings Around the House

Bruce and Paulette Share Their Story

Almost a year after Bruce's lung transplant, he remains appreciative of his experience at Transplant House, centered around the community of support and care. He could breathe easy knowing his wife, Paulette, was being looked after. She immersed herself in many group outings and became a sounding board for others. This, she says, is how you can feel the spirit of the House live on.

So Far in 2026, Your Support Has Made Possible...

Ring that Bell!

After 16 days in Cleveland, Mary rung the bell! She is heading home to northwestern Ohio after receiving a left lung transplant. Mary expressed gratitude to our team for being a caring presence and for thinking of all the little things to accommodate her stay. Mary, we were honored to have you– our doors are always open!

For all of us at Transplant House, bell ringings are a special moment, and we are lucky to share it with Mary. Every time a guest rings the bell we’re reminded of the difficult journey that has brought transplant recipients and their caregivers to this incredible moment. We thank Mary’s donor who made this milestone possible.

If you are not already a registered organ donor, please consider becoming one today.
