Dear Friends,
Since the pandemic began, LAYC staff have served as first responders for some of the most vulnerable members of our community. LAYC’s outreach continues to be critical to addressing long-standing health disparities across the DMV.

When we observed a widespread lack of understanding about the virus and hesitation about the vaccine, we created a COVID Response and Engagement team.

First, we focused on ourselves. Our COVID team launched a robust internal vaccination campaign, resulting in a 97% staff vaccination rate to date.
Next, our COVID team disseminated information in multiple languages on how to combat the spread of the virus. We educated youth and their families on COVID-19 testing options, and our DC site qualified as an approved testing location.

Finally, our COVID team partnered with the DC Mayor's COVID-19 Community Corps, knocking on doors to ensure communities with reduced access to health information, particularly communities of color, receive up-to-date information about the virus, testing, and the vaccine.
COVID Response and Engagement team highlight
In partnership with LAYC, DC’s Community Corps team was able to get 5,000 people vaccinated between June 19th and September 30th, and LAYC’s efforts substantially increased the vaccination rate among Latinos. LAYC’s own Community Corps members, all current and former LAYC participants with personal insight on our communities, suggested effective outreach approaches that were critical to our success in promoting vaccinations.

“Given the lack of information about the vaccine, I'm very proud of my team for spreading the right information and trying to help people understand what the vaccine is and how it fights against the virus”. - Noemi, Health Promotions Peer Educator/COVID Vaccine Support Staff
