At JFS, mental health isn’t just something we talk about—it’s something we deeply value. As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, we are proud to be building a healthier, more connected community.

On May 19, JFS joined Demetria Nelson, Commissioner of the Greenwich Department of Human Services and local social service leaders at the Greenwich Town Hall Proclamation for Mental Health Awareness Month. This event reminds us of the power of visibility, advocacy, and community partnership in reducing stigma and promoting mental wellness.

We asked JFS staff members what mental health means to them and how they stay grounded amid the demands of daily life. Here’s what they shared:

"I take a few quiet minutes each day to breathe and clear my mind. It helps me feel calm and focused." — Darly Mervius, Case Manager, Norwich
"Mental health means doing the inner and outer work—learning to say no, letting go of saving everyone, and putting on my own oxygen mask first." — Benson Casimir, Therapist
"I pause each day—through breathing, movement, or going outside—to stay grounded and to manage stress." — Irina Degtyur, Lead Case Manager, ICM
"For me, mental health is prioritizing a part of us that is often on autopilot. It's giving yourself the time and space to be heard and to develop ways to manage everything." — Katie Cervantes, Therapist
"A brief phone call with a friend I haven’t seen in a while! Reaching out and connecting always makes me feel better." — Daniela Valdovinos, Volunteer Coordinator of Older Adult Services
"I step outside every day—rain or shine—even if just for five minutes. A short walk or a breath of fresh air helps me reset and feel connected to something bigger." — Tania Priatka, Senior Program Manager, Preferred Communities

We are grateful to our staff for the care they show our clients—and themselves—and to our community partners for helping us spread awareness!

Meet Robin Berlin, a dedicated Bikur Cholim volunteer whose warmth and compassion bring light to patients at Greenwich Hospital. A lifelong New Yorker, Robin grew up in Queens and now lives in Rye Brook with her husband. A practicing attorney with deep roots in the Jewish community, Robin brings her rich life experience and heartfelt empathy to every visit.

Inspired by Rabbi MJ Newman—who once comforted her family during a difficult time—Robin began volunteering with JFS's Bikur Cholim program after feeling the need to give back. Her visits aren’t just check-ins—they’re connections. Whether reminiscing about Jewish holidays or simply sitting beside someone who feels alone, Robin reminds each patient that they are part of a community that cares. Through her weekly visits, she has formed bonds with fellow volunteers, rediscovered the power of community, and found a deeper appreciation for connection.

JFS is holding a Bikur Cholim training session this fall—a meaningful way to give back and be there for others when they need it most. Contact Jayme Schneider if you are interested!
