Hike, Bike, and Bark for Hospice Celebrates Unprecedented Community Support Raising $77,390
|
Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice Care Centre Foundation is thrilled to announce that the Hike, Bike, and Bark for Hospice event on September 29th raised an incredible $77,390 to support essential hospice services in our community.
The event attracted over 220 participants and just under 50 dogs to Victoria Park in Cobourg, where attendees enjoyed 2K, 5K, and 10K walks and bike rides, music from DJ George Martin, a kids’ area, and hot dogs grilled by the Lion's Club of Cobourg.
We are proud to recognize Matthew Elder as the Top Individual Fundraiser, having raised a total of $6,185. We would also like to thank the Elder Family team, the “Elder Avengers,” for raising $9,060 and earning the title of Top Team Fundraiser.
Thank you to all sponsors, volunteers, and committee members for making Hike, Bike, and Bark for Hospice a success!

Through funding from the Federal Government, the Province, and the Municipality of Trent Hills, we recently acquired a new accessible vehicle for our fleet. This 2023 Ford Transit has been retrofitted for our specialized service in Trent Hills. It offers increased seating capacity, multiple wheelchair spaces, and a hydraulic lift that allows our clients to load and unload with ease at ground level.
We would not have been able to purchase this vehicle without the support of this program, the funding, and our local community in the Municipality of Trent Hills.

Garden & Wind Phone Update
|
Under the skilled guidance of Lori Groves, Ed’s House Therapeutic Garden Coordinator, the vision of “Life Meets Us In The Garden” is taking shape with the assistance of our garden volunteers. Garden areas have been expanded and two new structures added, a sheltered smoking area at the top of our driveway and in our backyard, a wind phone.
The wind phone is a place for grieving people to feel a connection with loved ones who have died and features a bench and an unconnected, old-fashioned rotary dial phone. More detail on this will be forthcoming as we complete the final details of our wind phone in the coming weeks with a ribbon cutting is set to take place November 21st.

Each meal consists of a meat, starch, vegetable, soup with crackers, a dinner roll with butter, and a dessert - all for $9.00.
Our FROZEN Meals on Wheels Program provides clients with nutritious meals that are ready to prepare at their convenience. Meals are supplied by Apetito. The prices are as follows:
- Main Entrée - $7.00
- Soup/Dessert - $3.00
- Breakfast Snack - $3.00
Our COMMUNITY DINERS offer low-cost nutritional meals where individuals can gather to enjoy a meal at various locations, often featuring a guest speaker or entertainment.
Over the years, the Port Hope Legion has been incredibly generous, providing funds for insulated Meals on Wheels bags, carts, and subsidies for some of our Meals on Wheels clients. They also support our Community Diners by providing space for our lunches.

October is Community Support Month! This is a time to celebrate and raise awareness about the vital services provided by community support organizations and the dedicated professionals behind them.
These services include nursing and personal care, homemaking, Meals on Wheels, Alzheimer and Adult Day Programs, transportation to medical appointments, caregiver support, and hospice and palliative care. They enable clients to live independently in their homes and communities for as long as possible while also alleviating the burden on family caregivers and the broader health care system.
As Ontario's population continues to age, the demand for community support services will only grow. Join us in recognizing the critical support that helps vulnerable Ontarians thrive in their communities!
