Alzheimer's Caregivers Drawing Support From Students

Alongside the millions of Americans living with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia is an army of caregivers, most of them trying to also balance career and family at the same time. I recently read a news article regarding flu shots. Do the flu shots given at UConn Health have thimerosal in them? Both regular and “senior” versions?
Good question, which I shared with our infection prevention leaders. Thimerosal is a mercury-based preservative that has been used in multi-dose vials for years. Our flu vaccines do not contain thimerosal because the flu vaccines we have are single-dose.
On the subject of the influenza vaccine, a reminder: It’s not too late to get your flu shot to protect yourself, your family, your patients, and your colleagues by helping mitigate the spread of influenza, especially now that masking has become less commonplace in society. Remember, we are required to report the influenza vaccination status of our workforce to federal regulators, and our influenza policy requires us all to report this information by Dec. 31. So please do so if you haven’t already. The easiest way to be in compliance is to simply arrange to get your flu shot here, which has the reporting piece built in. Please see our flu vaccination program page for all the details on how to get vaccinated and how to report your status.
Thank you for the question, and please get your flu vaccine at UConn Health with the confidence it is free from the preservative thimerosal.
