Dear Neighbors,
Last Week, the Chicago Police provided an update regarding the success of the city’s joint carjacking task force, which is a collaboration with the FBI, and Department of Homeland Security as well as the State Police and Cook County Sheriff.
Thus far, the task force has made 325 arrests for 368 total offenses. Additionally, the department has launched a new website where you can learn more and provide tips.
We are pleased to see that the task force is addressing these crimes aggressively and we will continue with our 18th and 19th District Commanders to keep our community safe and informed.

United Center Vaccine Appointments Still Available for 65+, Group 1b, and those with underlying conditions

Chicago residents over the age of 65 may book appointments via the call center only, regardless of zip code.

Group 1B are Frontline Essential Workers, including:
- First responders: Fire, law enforcement, 911 worker, security personnel, school officer
- Education workers: K-12 teacher, school administrator, student support staff, student aide, day care worker and center-based child care provider, home visiting provider, early intervention therapists, Head Start/Early Head Start provider, Preschool for All provider
- Food and agriculture workers: Processing plants, veterinary health, livestock services, animal care
- Manufacturing workers: Industrial production of goods for distribution to retail, wholesale, or other manufactures
- Corrections workers and incarcerated individuals: Correctional officer and staff, jail officer and staff, juvenile facility staff, a worker providing in-person support or services, incarcerated individuals

- Public transit workers: Flight crew, bus driver, train conductor, taxi driver, para-transit driver, in-person support, ride sharing service driver
- Grocery store workers: Bagger, cashier, stocker, pickup, customer service

CPS Pre-School Meeting

As discussed in an earlier newsletter, CPS is bringing universal pre-school for 4 year olds to our area. This is the last phase of a four-year rollout of the program. If you are the parent of a toddler and wish to learn more about the program, please join our community meeting on Thursday.
CPS will be presenting the same educational information as detailed last night at our first meeting, and will also discuss the operational issues related to the particular location at Schubert and Clark. Here is the presentation from yesterday.
Representatives will answer questions from the audience. My office will conduct the discussion, take notes, and record your comments.
Normally, pre-schools are permitted in all districts and do not require a "special use." However, under our zoning code, pre-schools operated by CPS do require a special use.

Does the Illinois State Treasurer Have Money For You?
Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs and the 43rd Ward want you to know that most people are surprised to learn that the state might have their missing money or unclaimed property – and they don’t even know it.
How much money? More than $3.5 billion. See if your name is among those who have missing money by visiting ICash. Search your name, a relative’s name, the name of a business, or the name of a non-profit.
Why might the treasurer have your money? Sometimes, a letter or check is mailed to the wrong address. Examples of unclaimed property include unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, and unused rebate cards. The state treasurer is legally required to return the property to the rightful owner no matter how long it takes.
Treasurer Frerichs and the 19th Ward are ready to help you. "So far, my office has helped residents and businesses of the 43rd Ward recover over $40,000 in unclaimed assets from the Illinois State Treasurer, Michael Frerichs' ICash program," per Treasurer Frerichs.
An estimated one-in-four people in Illinois have unclaimed property. Because unclaimed property is surrendered to the treasurer’s office twice each year, you should check the database twice each year; for example, on your birthday and six months later.

All CPS families who have not yet returned to schools in-person can opt-in for a return later this year. The opt-in window will be available to students in all grades (grades Pre-K through 12) and Friday, March 19. Opt-in forms will be sent directly to parents, and this will be the final opportunity to choose in-person learning this school year.

Opt-In for Students in Pre-K, Elementary, and Cluster Programs: Families who have not yet returned to classrooms will be able to return Monday , April 19 — the first day of the 4th-quarter. Families who are already enrolled in classroom-based learning will not need to fill out the intent form to remain in-person.
To give families additional opportunities to learn about our plans and provide input, CPS is scheduling two virtual parent town halls — one for elementary and one for high school— in the next two weeks:
The district is actively meeting with the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) to establish a plan for the return of high school students and staff. No return date has been set and the specific learning model used in high schools remains under discussion, but CPS hopes students will be able to return to school as early as mid-April. They are asking families for their learning preference now so that the necessary staffing and classroom models will be in place to safely support all interested high school students.
All elementary schools will follow a strict set of health and safety protocols including required face-coverings and social distancing.
Our high schools will also be provided with the air purifiers, hand sanitizer, and enhanced cleaning practices that have allowed CPS to safely reopen our elementary schools for in-person learning.
