The Global Art Project (GAP), founded in 2013 by Carl Heyward, Akiko Suzuki, Lorna Crane, Chaewon Oh, Vered Gersztenkorn and Joan Stennick, are an international mixed-media collective of over 90 artists across 19 countries. Through exhibitions, residencies, and resource exchanges, GAP champions collaborative practices, exploring the concept of "fragmentation" in art. Artists share diverse materials and ideas, creating works that transcend cultural boundaries while promoting artistic democracy. From workshops in Italy and Mexico to exhibitions worldwide, GAP fosters creative dialogue and discovery. By embracing experimentation and collaboration, GAP continues to redefine contemporary art's landscape, nurturing a vibrant community of artists dedicated to innovation and expression. One of the latest projects is CrossingBorders: We are all Immigrants.

CrossingBorders: WE ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS

An exhibition of works by members of Global Art Project, an international multimedia collaborative collective with over 90 members operating in 19 different countries.

Exhibition concept:

The Borders are wide, various, concrete and philosophical, offering an illusion of safety and definitive organization of reality buttressed by or colliding with the shifts in perception, power alignments, cultural imperatives, and agendas at play at any given moment both on the international and the personal, subjective stage.

Borders as a theme not defined, but implied. The obvious way to look at Borders is as it relates to geographic demarcation and via socio-political implications, however, the artists in this exhibition take it one step further examining Borders that confound and limit us personally; Borders to be psychologically challenged, broken through and/or accepted.

CrossingBorders: WE ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS poses the question, “Where can we find a safe haven?

With immigration looming large as a hot-button item politically, polarizing and unifying, this exhibition will demonstrate the many ways artists create works that deal with this question. From the lack of compassion to international and jurisdictional walls being built, the exhibiting artists dive deeply into depictions of ethnocentric responses and unreasonable blockages to the ever-present desperation of immigrants trying to find a home/country they can feel safe in when they do not feel safe in their own.

In photographs, paintings, monumental sculptures, installations, and performances, CrossingBorders offers insight into concerns ranging from gender transformation to the Atlantic slave trade, the DNA of consolidation, and the immigrant at the border, on the shore welcomed or washed out.

The Westbeth exhibition is curated by artist Carl Heyward and GAP founding member Akiko Suzuki

Coming November 2024 Inspirational Art Magazine #91 an expansion of the perception of Borders by

artist Christine Selzer

"To answer the question: "What borders are you willing to cross?" refers to each one of us, and what is crucial for us to overcome. Personally, as a human being and artist, I will give an example of what Borders I myself have been attempting to cross throughout my life, and still am.

First, as I am not alone to face such challenges in life, I will deposit the story of a friend and student of mine, as I also happen to be a yoga teacher. They are both personal and refer to mental and psychological abuse."
