Dear Fourth and Fifth Grade Families,

We are excited to share a fun opportunity for 4th through 8th grade students this fall!

Our school is proud to participate in the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge, a statewide initiative led by Ohio Lt. Governor Jim Tressel and the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. The challenge strives to help students form healthy habits in the physical activity, nutrition, and sleep through individual goal setting.

Here's how it works:

  • The challenge will take place over 90 days from September to December, and is intended to be completed outside of school hours.
  • Each student will receive a challenge workbook to guide them through three levels beginning at Bronze, then going on to Silver, and ending at Gold.
  • At each level, students will use their workbooks to set personal goals and track progress in the core areas of physical activity, nutrition and sleep.
  • When the challenge is completed, every student participating will receive a certificate signed by Governor DeWine and Lt. Governor Tressel.

I encourage you to support your child at home by helping them stay active, prepare healthy meals, and maintain consistent sleep routines. If you have any questions please reach out to schools challenge coordinator David Meikrantz at meikrada@delawarecityschools.net

Let’s work together to help our students grow healthier, stronger, and more confident in themselves.

  • If you do not report your child's absence, you will receive phone calls / texts / emails via our interactive phone system for you to verify your student's absence. You may also receive calls from the school office.

  • You may report your student's absence for the same day until 15 minutes after the start of school. After that time, you must call the school office or use the interactive features when you receive a notification call.

  • You can schedule planned absences in advance by using the online portal or Smartphone App.

  • It is important that you maintain a current phone number and email address with your child's school to ensure timely communication regarding your child.

Changes in your student's normal dismissal routine:

Please send a note to your child's teacher and contact the school office at 740-833-1450. Please call the office by 2:00 pm for any same day dismissal changes. If there is no contact with the school regarding the change, your child will follow their normal dismissal routine.

Cell Phone Policy Reminder

The State of Ohio recently passed legislation that prohibits the use of cell phones during the school day in an effort to minimize distractions and support a focused learning environment for all students. Student use of cellular phones and other electronic communication devices will not be permitted during the school day from 8:30-3:15.

Personal communication devices, including cell phones, earbuds, headphones and watches, must be powered off and stored out of sight during the entire school day. Exceptions may be made to accommodate IEP/504 plans and for documented medical reasons.

As always, if you have an urgent need to get a message to your student, please call our school office and our staff will ensure the message is delivered.

Building Security Procedures

Delaware City Schools has implemented an enhanced visitor management system at all schools and the district office.

The system will allow us to screen visitors, contractors, and volunteers during the school day and better track the guests in our buildings. Visitor management systems are considered a best practice, and schools across the state and nation have used them successfully to screen and track school visitors.

Visitors to our schools, including volunteers, will need to present a government issued ID card (most common is driver’s license) which will be scanned into the system.

The system checks the visitor's name and date of birth for comparison with a national database of registered sex offenders and various criminal databases. Once entry is approved, the visitor will be issued a temporary badge that should be worn during the visit.

The safety of our students is our highest priority, and we thank you in advance for your understanding and your support in enhancing the school safety protocols in our district.

If you receive a message that the number is not in the DCS system, please contact the Carlisle office and request to add your number or make a change to the number we have on file. Delaware City Schools and the Delaware community are experiencing an uptick in cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD). We are working closely with the Delaware Health Department to monitor cases within the schools. HFMD is a common illness caused by a virus and is typically mild. Although it is more common in younger children, teens and adults can be affected. The Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Fact Sheet provides additional information that may be useful to your family.

The schools will continue to reinforce hand washing, covering mouths when coughing or sneezing, and provide frequent cleaning to the surface areas shared by our students. We appreciate your partnership as we strive to keep a healthy learning environment for all students.
