School Bus Safety Tips As Students Return

Classrooms are filled with students and teachers, meaning school buses are on roads throughout the region.

Here are tips from NHTSA for keeping children safe when riding buses.

Parents should talk bus safety with children. Your child should arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Teach children to play it SAFE:

  • Stay at least ten feet — five giant steps — away from the curb.
  • Always wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the bus driver signals for you to board.
  • Face forward after finding a seat on the bus.
  • Exit the bus after it stops and look left-right-left for cars before crossing a street.

Township Moves Forward With Pedestrian Improvements

The Township is moving ahead with a project that will calm traffic and improve pedestrian safety.

The work includes the installation of LED stop signs at the intersection of Garfield Avenue and Supplee Lane and Township Line Road and North Wales Road. Flashing pedestrian crossing signs will be installed at the intersections of North Wales Road and Moyer Boulevard,

Hancock Road and Marlyns Lane, Hancock Road and the Gwyn-Nor Elementary entrance and

Hancock Road & Gwyn-Nor Elementary exit.

The improvements are being funded by a Montgomery County 2040 grant for $98,704.

Land Development Projects On September 13 Planning Commission Agenda

Three land development applications are scheduled for the September 13 Planning Commission meeting. Please read below for details on the projects.

IDA Works To Create And Maintain Jobs

The Industrial Development Authority (IDA) was formed in 2005 by Upper Gwynedd Township as an entity which issues tax-exempt obligations on behalf of nonprofit organizations which are 501(c)3 entities.

The Upper Gwynedd Township IDA has issued tax-exempt financing on behalf of a YMCA building, a continuing care residence for the elderly, conference center, office buildings, healthcare facilities, treatment facilities, outpatient and in-patient facilities

The borrowers include corporations, trusts, community chests, LLCs, and unincorporated associations, but that tax laws favor nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations. Other beneficiaries of IDA financing are often libraries, museums or other similar non-profit institutions.

Our goals are to help create and maintain jobs and spur business opportunities within, but not limited to our community. Banks usually offer the financing at below-market-rate interest, with repayment terms up to 30 years. Loan proceeds depending on the project can be applied to such capital projects as land acquisition, construction of new facilities, additions or renovations to existing structures, equipment purchases, refinancing and some soft costs.

Interested parties should contact the Upper Gwynedd Township Industrial Development Authority through Township Manager Sandra Zadell at 215-699-7777 or IDA President Albert Bailey at 215-699-9036.

Be Safe In The September Heat

High temperatures are expected to last through tomorrow. Remember to take precautions in the heat.

Meet Christian Pepe

Christian Pepe started working as a laborer for Upper Gwynedd Parks and Recreation on May 1, making him the newest addition to his department.

Starting as early as 6:30 a.m., Christian makes sure that Township grounds are, in his own words, in “tip-top shape” for residents. When visiting the Township Building and seeing the pristine landscaping work, that is Christian and his team’s handiwork.

Christian’s started working in landscaping at 13, bringing 13 years of knowledge and expertise to the Township. He often shares this experience with other new employees. Despite this, Christian says that he is still learning every day, and looks forward to the challenges that the job presents.

His work overlaps with Public Works and Christian enjoys the cooperation between the two departments.

Christian’s work is greatly appreciated by the Township and we are happy to have him as a part of the community.
