Monday, March 19th 2018, 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Venue: NC State University, 101 Current Drive, Park Shops 210

In 2012, Rita Crundwell was arrested, becoming the largest municipal fraud perpetrator in the nation's history, embezzling upwards of $50 million as the comptroller and treasurer of Dixon, a city in the heart of Illinois. Using stolen funds, Crundwell became one of the nation's leading quarter horse breeders, traveled the world, and threw lavish parties, all while forcing staff cuts, slashing the police budget and leaving public infrastructure in disrepair. The film All the Queen's Horses illuminates this landmark case and brings to light the blatant negligence of auditors and bankers the public relied on to keep their tax dollars safe. Carolina MPA faculty member, Dr. Kim Nelson , is featured in the film.

MPA@UNC student Charles Lucas's teenage children aren't waiting until adulthood to make their mark on helping others. Together, the family worked with software developers to create the NotOk app, which allows teens to contact five friends with a single button when they need help physically or emotionally.
Hannah and Charlie Lucas have seen the app launch nationwide and be featured on such news sites as Good Morning America. Dad Charles couldn't be prouder! If you have questions or would like to hear more, please contact Charles.
MPA Student Matt Hughes Appointed to Hillsborough, NC Town Commissioners
The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners has appointed Matt Hughes to serve as a town commissioner.
At the board’s recent regular meeting, Commissioner Mark Bell nominated Hughes. No other nominations were made, and the vote in favor of Hughes was unanimous.
“I am humbled to be appointed and excited to represent and serve my hometown in this position as Hillsborough faces great opportunities as well as challenges,” Hughes said. “I hope to provide the residents of Hillsborough with positive, productive, and proactive leadership on issues ranging from affordable housing to development and infrastructure in the coming months and years.”
Hughes is also a student in the MPA@UNC Program.
Maureen Berner , Carolina MPA Professor, had long considered going abroad to do research comparing governmental and non-profit responses to poverty and food security. This past fall, she had the opportunity to do so, exchanging positions and homes with a faculty member from Antwerp University in Belgium. There, she gained a better understanding on Europe's perecption of poverty as "material deprivation and social exclusion," as well as lessons to bring back to North Carolina. Read the rest here !
