McKimmon Conference and Training Center
Raleigh, NC
High-speed broadband is critical to nearly every aspect of day-to-day life.
The forum will focus on how businesses, government, farmers and students of all ages can use high speed internet more effectively and bring them together for discussions to explore the potential benefits.
Small businesses might be interested in improving markets—one recent study estimates that rural small businesses in North Carolina could add an additional $1.9 billion to their local economies if they took full advantage of their digital potential. Other research suggests that farmers can increase yields and better target fertilizer using high speed data tools; adults and students can improve learning and gain job skills; seniors can access health care services efficiently. Currently, only about 60% of families with access to high speed services are taking advantage of it. The forum will also explore how to overcome barriers to adoption of technology.
We're excited to announce our keynote speaker:
Larry Irving
, groundbreaking researcher on the digital divide whose work in Internet policy has had a global impact, earning him a spot in the Internet Hall of Fame. Learn more about him and the great lineup of speakers joining us on February 10, 2020 at the McKimmon Conference & Training Center. We need your voice!

Free Statistical / Data Science Consulting
The UNC Department of Statistics and Operations Research announces the availability of free statistical / data science consulting. Our goal is to teach this important skill to graduate students, but you can get some free data analytic assistance in the process.
The course format involves clients giving a presentation about the problem at hand. This generates a question and answer dialog, which by itself has proven to be useful in helping clients formulate their ideas. Then typically one student is assigned to work on the actual data, with a final written report expected.
In the past we have worked with a very wide range of clients, from Masters students needing help with the statistical end of their dissertation, all the way up to distinguished professors. While there are limits to what can be done in the context of this course, some contacts initially made through this course have led to ongoing joint research, grant proposals and published papers in very diverse fields.
To sign up for this type of consulting, or to discuss this further, please contact Steve Marron, Department of Statistics and Operations Research, UNC, CB 3260, Email:
marron@unc.edu. Additional information is available at the web address:
