UPDATED Hurricane Florence Relief Efforts

Emergency Management Resources
The UNC School of Government is offering an Emergency Management microsite, curated by Norma Houston, to assist in the ongoing Hurricane Florence Relief Efforts. Check out their Resource Link for information that may be valuable for your community.

Supply Collection
The School of Government is also continuing to collect supplies for hurricane-affected areas. "Fill the Truck - Round 2" is happening right now for items needed in Jones County and the Coharie and Waccamaw Siouan Tribes. If you're in the building, please bring supplies to the first floor of Knapp-Sanders near the mailboxes by Tuesday, October 9, at 11 am. Needed items are:

  • Mosquito repellent
  • Cleaning supplies (mops, brooms, dustpans, face masks, sponges, buckets, spray bottles, wipes)
  • Canned vegetables
  • Dry cereal, cereal bars
  • Paper goods (napkins, plates, cups, knives, spoons)
  • Feminine products
  • Adult diapers
  • Quart-sized and gallon-sized food storage bags

The supply drive does NOT need water, baby supplies, clothing or used/open containers.

Student Emergency Fund Challenge
The Hurricane Florence Student Emergency Fund Challenge aims to raise $1 million to support students faced with unexpected financial hardships wrought by the storm. Meeting the Challenge will provide a total of $2 million in relief; we have already contributed $1 million from our trademark licensing revenue and income from UNC Student Stores, in addition to our ongoing funding committed to need-based scholarships.

We ask you to help us raise the remaining $1 million by making a donation at giving.unc.edu/gift/relief . Meeting our goal will send a clear message to these students and families in their time of need: We are here for you.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has identified 28 counties in southeastern North Carolina as disaster areas. We have more than 2,800 students — undergraduate and graduate — from those counties.

Every student now coping with Hurricane Florence’s aftermath has a story to tell. Take Margaret, a Carolina Covenant Scholar from just outside Wilmington. While her family’s home escaped the worst of the storm’s wrath, it could not escape the flooding that followed. Her parents, now unable to work, are living in temporary accommodations with her younger sister. Margaret knows her parents can no longer help her financially and she has already submitted documentation to reevaluate her financial aid package.

In addition to making a gift to help students like Margaret, we ask that you encourage students you know who need help to email florence@unc.edu . UNC will use this address to take requests for aid from the Florence Student Emergency Fund . Additional information for students wishing to apply for funding can be found here .

Dean Smith's Latest Blog on Burden of Proof
Here is my next blog post. This one talks about one of my favorite podcasts, Revisionist History by Malcolm Gladwell (pictured right). It is a thought-provoking podcast partly because Gladwell is an exceptional story teller. I encourage you to check out the podcast. My post focuses on one episode that asks how much evidence is required about the harmfulness of some behaviors before taking action. Gladwell makes an argument about the safety of football that is worth thinking hard about. As you will see if you read the post it also made me think about the level of proof we should require before taking certain actions at the School. I’ll be interested in your thoughts. Thanks.

             - Dean Mike Smith

PS- Other recent topics on the blog include Senator John McCain, Civility, Silent Sam, and the efforts to recover from Hurricane Florence in Kinston, NC. Be sure to check out any you've missed!
