  • PUBA 780-001 Arbitration (Sample Syllabus)
  • Meets on campus Tuesdays, 9:30 am-12:30 pm during the weeks of 1/15-2/26
  • PUBA 765-001 Capital Budgeting and Finance (sample syllabus)
  • Meets on campus Tuesdays, 9:30 am-12:30 pm during the weeks of 3/5-4/23
  • PUBA 763-001 Grant Writing (sample syllabus)
  • Meets online 2/25, 3/4, 3/18, 4/1, and 4/15 as well as on campus 12-5 pm on April 15 and 9 am-2 pm on April 16
  • This class may NOT be taken in addition to PUBA 764, our 3-hour online Grant Writing Course, as it covers much of the same material.

We're also tentatively planning the next Immersion for Fall, 2019, so be on the lookout for additional details TBA!

Early Bird Deadline coming up for Bureaucrats' Ball Tickets!!!

It's now time to purchase your early bird tickets for the annual MPA Bureaucrats' Ball! Ticket prices will increase to $30 after 11/16 at 5 pm, so get yours now!!!

We’ve got a few things planned to make this year’s Ball stand out. Come early for an exclusive tour of the newly renovated back galleries at 6:30 PM, including expanded African art collection, before they’re open to the public. There will also be special performances by the MPA Band (working title: “The Bolman Deal”) and stand-up comedy by MPA student Josh Rosenstein (find out why “putt-putt” is his top local government issue). Featured beverages from a local brewery. Delicious appetizers from a local restaurant . And dessert by MPA student and former culinary school student Ross Hatton.

Unused to the new School of Government registration system? NO worries, we have a tutorial with screenshots to help you. Maddie Shea is also available for your questions. This year's event will feature food, adult beverages, dancing, open art galleries, and entertainment (such as MPA-themed stand-up comedy and a pre-event MPA-themed gallery tour!). ALL students, faculty, and staff are invited to join in the festivities!
Come to the DFI Interest Session!

The School of Government's very own Development Finance Initiative will host an Interest session on Tuesday, November 27th, 12:30-1:30 pm in 3301 Knapp-Sanders and online. Join Carolina MPA alum Omar Kashef to hear more about what they do, the PUBA/PLAN 735 course offered in the spring, and their Summer 2019 Fellowship. Additional details will be sent via email to the Listservs. Feel free to bring your lunch!

Secret Lives of the MPA Students
Current second-year MPA Student Josh Rosenstein moonlights as a stand-up comedian. He's hosted the weekly open mic at Zog's in Chapel Hill since 2014 and is a regular performer at venues across the Triangle, especially the People's Improv Theater on Franklin Street. He's also toured in Australia and done comedy festivals in Chapel Hill, Greensboro, and Seattle. His work as a performer led him to serve on the Chapel Hill Cultural Arts Commission, which is what got him interested in local government and non-profits and led him apply for the MPA program. Josh will be performing at the Bureaucrats' Ball later this month, so come check out his set!
***Secret Lives of the MPA Students will hopefully be a regular feature in the Digest and not so secret. Do you have a hidden talent? Volunteer with a cool organization? Accomplish something cool at work? Be sure to submit a photo with details so we can continue to learn more about one another! Feel free to nominate a friend, too! ***
Carolina MPA Faculty News
Stenberg Helps Local Governments Navigate State Powers
The July 2018 issue of Public Management magazine included an article titled “ Local Government Options in the Era of State Preemption .” This article was written as a collaboration between MPA faculty member Carl Stenberg, retired professor James Svara, and associate professor and director at the Center for Urban Innovation at Arizona State University David Swindell.

The article first summarizes the origins of local government powers. The authors then identify ways in which these powers have been restricted, and offer insight as to how local governments can continue to operate under these limited conditions. Find out more here !
