Happy Thanksgiving!
The Carolina MPA Program wishes all students, faculty, & staff a Happy Thanksgiving this week! We are thankful for each and every one of YOU. Stay safe in your travels, or enjoy staying at home before the final push of the fall term!
Students Chosen for Student Leadership Councils
The online and on-campus Student Leadership Councils recently seated new students. These students represent their cohorts in feedback to the MPA Program Office and plan initiatives for all students, and all have already gotten on board that process. Please contact one of your representatives today!

Michelle Kirsh of Middlebury VT, Jeana Taylor of Las Vegas, NV, and Meagan Kascsak of Leland, NC, have joined the Online SLC, all after starting the MPA Program earlier in 2019. The Online SLC will take applications from those starting the MPA Program in August & September 2019 in January 2020.

For the On-Campus SLC, Molly Gaskin of Eldersburg, MD, and Rebecca Hall of Hudson, NC, have been elected to represent the Class of 2021. Clay Fleming of Coats, NC, will serve as Alumni Board Representative. Jacob Newton of Hamlet, NC, has been elected Graduate and Professional Student Federation Senator for the Class of 2021, a position that also includes SLC membership.

Dean's Smith's Latest Blog
Here is my next blog post. It is about the recent Tar Heel Bus Tour, and mostly about the western route that I was hosting. In addition to participation by folks from the SOG mentioned in my post, Norma Houston participated in a session at the Governor’s Mansion and folks from DFI participated at an economic development stop in Kinston. The School was incredibly well represented. The bus tour is one of those things that you need to experience to fully appreciate. The positive feelings, gratitude, and humility shared by the participants was amazing. Read the post and get a little sense of what happened.

Hello Tar Heels!

For the first time UNC CH will be participating in Map the System--a global competition that challenges you to think differently about social or environmental change. Students on our campus are passionate about so many different issues and this competition allows you to share that! Research a social or environmental problem that matters to you and gain the skills in systems thinking to understand ways to address it. Finalists will have the chance to compete for cash prizes in a prestigious competition organized by Said Business School, University of Oxford with all expenses covered!

For more information and to register online, go to  http://mapthesystem.sbs.ox.ac.uk/take-part/ . Feel free to email  mapthesystem@unc.edu  with any questions you have. Teams have until February 5, 2020 to register!
St. Gallen Symposium Essay Competition
The St. Gallen Symposium is the world’s leading initiative for intergenerational debates on economic, political, and social developments. Since 1969, we have fostered fruitful discourses as a student-run initiative combining excellence with innovative ideas.
This year t hrough our Global Essay Competition, graduate and post-graduate students can qualify for an all-expenses-covered participation  in the 50 th Anniversary of our annual conference located in St. Gallen, Switzerland . The top three of the 100 participants selected through our essay competition have the unique opportunity of presenting their ideas in front of a world-renowned audience and share in the grand prize of CHF 20’000- .
Completely  organized by students, we are proud to have welcomed distinguished participants over the years including  Christine Lagarde , former Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Jack Ma , founder of Alibaba Group, and Dominic Barton , Managing Partner Emeritus McKinsey & Company.
Due to time constraints I do not have the possibility of visiting North Carolina this year. However, I believe that your graduate and postgraduate students could greatly benefit from this experience, and more importantly, represent the University of North Carolina in our globally recognized conference this May.
Therefore, I would be extremely grateful if you could spread the word of our Global Essay Competition to your students. The submission takes place online at www.symposium.org/essay-competition .
Please let me know if you have any questions and/or would like to receive our fact sheet, topic outline, and promotional flyer to pass on to students.
Sincerely,
Eduardo Ludwig Bernardo
