Secret Lives of the MPA Students
Bakers Extraordinaire!
Come up to the MPA Wing many mornings, and you'll smell fresh baked goods despite the kitchenette having no oven. The breads, brownies, cupcakes, and more are from MPA students sharing their latest home bakes. Sometimes attached with labels such as "Contains gluten and graduate school procrastination," these donations have been a big hit.

“Unlike never ending literature reviews, baking bread has a beginning, a middle, and an end. It’s a physical process that gets me away from the computer. And while you can intellectualize all of the chemistry that goes into proofing times and gluten development, baking bread is really done by feeling and trial-and-error. So I don’t bake for my classmates, I bake for myself. That said, it does help to have friends to share the results with to keep me from eating it all," says Andy Shoenig .

Courtney Cooper-Lewter also finds pleasure in baking, " I enjoy baking because it helps me de-stress. Plus, I get to be creative and make things that other people enjoy! I also have a really big sweet tooth so there are some perks for me too!"

“I didn’t start getting into baking until I got my first apartment. At first, I began baking popular breads and cookies, especially during the holidays. It became a great way for me to relieve stress and share what I made with my friends," adds Mimi Clemens . "Out of everything that I have baked for the MPA cohort, the ginger bread loaf by far was everyone’s favorite! Coming out of the holiday season, I have baked pumpkin bread and brownies so far. I’m still learning how to bake better, but I enjoy surprising the MPAs with something I baked from home.”

Baking isn't limited to the mornings, either! This past fall, Ross Hatton headed up a group that made desserts for the 100 attendees of the Bureaucrats' Ball!

So, the next time you find yourself in the MPA wing and see a plate full of homemade goods, please help yourself. After all, you'll be doing these students a favor.

Dean Mike Smith's Latest Blog
Here is my next blog post. This one describes an important new partnership with the North Carolina City-County Management Association. It represents a great opportunity to increase our impact on local government by helping NCCCMA accomplish more of their organizational and programmatic goals. There is a wonderful alignment between NCCCMA and the School. Thanks to everyone who participated in the NCCCMA winter seminar last week in Winston-Salem. Special thanks to Lisa Sheffield for a terrific job in managing the complicated event. Check out the post and start thinking about her your work might be more aligned with the interests of NCCCMA. Thanks a lot.

February 26, 3:30PM
Bull’s Head Bookshop | 207 South Rd, Chapel Hill
TaKeia N. Anthony offers the first study of the ideology, influences, and contributions of the Universal Ethiopian Students’ Association (UESA) and  The African: The Journal of African Affairs . From 1927–1948, the UESA mobilized the African diaspora to fight against imperialism and fascist Italy. Formed by a group of educated Africans, African-Americans, and West Indians based in Harlem and shaped by the ideals of Ethiopianism, communism, Pan-Africanism, Black Nationalism, Garveyism, and the New Negro Movement, the UESA sought to educate the diaspora about its glorious African past and advocate for anti-imperialism and independence. This book focuses on the UESA’s literary organ, The African, mapping a constellation of understudied activists and their contributions to the fight for Black liberation in the twentieth century.

The Author: TaKeia N. Anthony is Assistant Professor of History at North Carolina Central University, USA.

Join us at Chapel Hill landmark, Varsity Theatre, for a screening of Strange Fruit , the first documentary exploring the history and legacy of the Billie Holiday classic. The song's evolution tells a dramatic story of America's radical past using one of the most influential protest songs ever written as its epicenter. The saga brings viewers face- to- face with the terror of lynching even as it spotlights the courage and heroism of those who fought for racial justice when to do so was to risk ostracism and livelihood if white - and death if Black. It examines the history of lynching, and the interplay of race, labor and the left, and popular culture as forces that would give rise to the Civil Rights Movement. A discussion will take place after the film’s screening. This event is free and open to the public but registration is required.  Click here to register
