Conversation on Comparative Law & Government for MPA Students

Professor Charles Szypszak invites you to join Dr. Agata Hauser from Poland and him for an exchange about comparative law and government, at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13, in SOG Room 2401. Dr. Hauser will begin with brief comments and be open to discussion on topics of interest. Former MPA students will find her perspective interesting on some of the fundamental issues discussed in Law for Public Administration.

Dr. Hauser teaches international law and organizations, human rights, and constitutional law at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan. She is visiting pursuant to a grant from the International Visegrad Fund. She speaks several languages, including English as if a native, and has insight into trends in human rights issues in Europe. She is a frank and engaging speaker. Poland is at the forefront of political, judicial, and civil liberty challenges in Europe. Professor Szypszak and she have collaborated for several years both in Poland and here at UNC.

You are also invited to attend her talk at the UNC FedEx center at 5:30 on February 12, which is described at this announcement:  https://cseees.unc.edu/event/polish-courts/

***Please note that the 1 pm event will be available live online in Zoom (link to be sent later). To allow Dr. Hauser to speak openly, the event will not be recorded, so please make plans to attend if able.***

On behalf of the UNC Institute of Politics, the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, and the UNC School of Government, you are invited to “An Evening with Michael Chertoff.” The event will be Thursday, February 21st, at 6:30pm in Rosenau Hall 133 at UNC Chapel Hill.

Michael Chertoff was US Secretary of Homeland Security from 2005 to 2009, and had previously served as a US Attorney, a US Assistant Attorney General, and a Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. The Secretary’s talk will cover a broad range of topics with a particular emphasis on digital and cyber security.

We also hope you will join us for a light reception after the Secretary’s event where you may meet the Secretary, speak with other guests, or pick up a copy of his new book. Do let us know if we can expect you by submitting  this RSVP form  and we very much look forward to having you with us soon. Full details of the event can be found in the flyer below.

MPA Student Spotlight
New Online Student Leadership Council Members Selected
Stephany Pizano and Carryl Tinsley were recently selected to represent the August and September 2018 cohorts in the Online Student Leadership Council. Their first SLC meeting will be this week, and they have introduced themselves to you below:

Stephany: I was born and raised in the Bay Area, CA. I currently work in the Health Initiative of the Americas a center of the School of Public Health in UC Berkeley that focuses on promoting health awareness for Latinos in the US. During my free time she loves to watch mystery series, listen to music, and try new foods.

Carryl: I think I could win a world record for number of times people mispronounce my name. It’s pronounced Carl, which really throws people off. I blame my deep love for the beach and water and all things North Carolina on my hometown of Wilmington, a small town on the North Carolina coast. I currently live in Raleigh, where I do Marketing for a nonprofit called StepUp Ministry, that helps adults and children transform their lives through employment and life skills training. In my “free time” (haha) I love writing, cheering on the Tar Heels (born and bred), serving in ministry in my church with youth and young adults, and exploring new spots in my city with friends. I am trying to make myself a reader and a runner, but TBD on the success of those endeavors. I am pursuing an MPA because I would love to one day lead a nonprofit organization, serving people, telling their stories, and advocating on their behalf.
Secret Lives of the MPA Students
Jeana Taylor
After getting a classical acting training at UCLA, Jeana moved into improv and sketch comedy with an intention to do sitcoms. A random email from Cirque du Soleil changed everything and, after an intense audition process, Jeana ended up running away to Las Vegas to join the circus. Soon she was learning how to fall into airbags and run around on a moving wall. A lifelong goal was to make a living as an actor and that was all consuming. Over time, it became more important to Jeana to have a greater impact on her community. She founded Everyday People Taking Action, a group dedicated to greater civic engagement, and got involved with political campaigns. A chance to get an online MPA with UNC, and get top-notch training in non-profit leadership and local government, proved irresistible. Jeana is currently thinking about running an arts non-profit that serves an underprivileged community. She currently resides in Las Vegas with her husband and her two young children.

Dean Mike Smith's Latest Blog
Here is my next blog post. It is about our commitment to doing more work to support policy makers, and particularly about how ncIMPACT exists as a vehicle for doing that. There are examples of how it is supporting faculty on policy projects, including the Drinking Water Working Group and the Opioid Project. Plus check out the new UNC-TV program of the same name, ncIMPACT. As a shameless way to encourage you to at least view this post, it includes a priceless picture of Jill Moore going one-on-one (sort of—well, not really) with UNC basketball alum, Kennedy Meeks. Check it out.

Join Liz Crabill, Chief Deputy Secretary for the North Carolina Department of Commerce, to hear her perspectives on the importance of university-driven entrepreneurship and workforce development for making an economic impact across the state. Liz will discuss her role at the Department of Commerce and answer key questions like:
  • What role does the Department of Commerce play in the state – and how does Liz's office help drive the department’s mission?

  • How is the workforce landscape in North Carolina changing as it transitions to an innovation economy?

  • What kinds of skills will best prepare students to be highly adaptable participants in an innovation workforce?

  • How can faculty, student and alumni talent be a magnet that helps attract companies to the state?

  • How can universities partner with the Department of Commerce on key initiatives to create win-win situations for the state and academic institutions?

  • How can the university proactively engage with the Dept. of Commerce to support strategic efforts?

James Forman Jr. challenges all of us—black and non-black, liberal and conservative alike—to take responsibility for the tragedy of mass incarceration. And to take action to do something about it. With a lawyer’s clarity and activists’s compassion, he shows why Americans concerned about crime made the choices they did and reminds us that we have the power to make better, more just decisions.

The Ethics of Now is a series of conversations between Duke historian Adriane Lentz-Smith and a range of artists, advocates, and authors that explore the ethical challenges facing the Durham and Duke communities. For more information visit dukeethics.org.
