Carolina MPA Students Participate in NASPAA-Batten Student Simulation
Congratulations to on-campus format student Chase Loudermelt and online format students Jeana Taylor, Meredith Marlier, Jane Kaufmann, and Tiffany Oliva, who were all recently selected to represent the Carolina MPA Program at the 2021 NASPAA-Batten Student Simulation. The NASPAA-Batten Student Simulation Competition is a day-long event that allows graduate students in public policy and related fields to test their skills on real-world data.

Each year, the Center for Leadership Simulation and Gaming develops an original participatory simulation specifically tailored for students of public policy and administration. The simulations give participants a chance to employ their knowledge in a realistic situation, as well as an opportunity hone skills in leadership, negotiation, and critical thinking.

Each student was placed on a team with MPA students from around the country to compete virtually on February 27. This year's topic was Pandemic 2.0. Tiffany Oliva's team won her competition site and will be moving on to the upcoming global competition! Says Oliva, "The NASPAA-Batten simulation competition was an opportunity for me to apply some of the skills I have learned in UNC’s MPA program to make quick, team decisions about economic, health, and equity policy to contain a pandemic outbreak. It was a fun learning experience, and I am excited to have moved on to compete in the global round of the competition with our team of students from NYU, VCU, and the University of Missouri.”

We hope that you will consider applying to be part of next year's team!

Invitation to Participate in Focus Groups on Impact of COVID on UNC Graduate Students

To UNC – Chapel Hill MPA students:
You are invited to take part in a research study about your academic, social and housing experiences and how it has been impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This study is being conducted by Dr. Maureen Berner, faculty member in the UNC MPA program, Dr. Hazael Andrew of UNC Dept. of Student Affairs (Worldview Program) and Ms. Jessica Soldavini, Doctoral Candidate at the Gillings School of Public Health.

This research study was reviewed by the UNC Chapel Hill Institutional Review Board (IRB# 20-3306) and determined to be exempt from federal human subjects research regulations.
Thank you for considering this invitation. If you have any questions about this study, please contact UNC-CH Institutional Review Board (phone: 919-966-3113, email: IRB_subjects@unc.edu), Ansley Birchmore at abirchm@email.unc.edu, or Professor Berner at the e-mail address listed below.
