MPA News
Deil Wright Lecture is NEXT WEEK!

This event is free and open to the public and will take place online. Interested individuals can register at go.unc.edu/Wright21.

Riccucci will examine the predictions demographers and economists made in the 1980s about how the social makeup of the American workforce will change by the 21st century. It was predicted that by the year 2000 greater job opportunities for African Americans and Latinx would be created, particularly in the technology industry. She will discuss whether these forecasts have been realized and achieved.

Riccucci is the author of numerous publications and books including Policy Drift: Shared Powers and the Making of U.S. Law and Policy (New York University Press, 2018). Riccucci’s research interests lie in the broad area of public management, with specific interests in social equity policies and representative bureaucracy.

Visit go.unc.edu/Wright21 to register for this lecture – webinar access information is contained within the calendar download, provided upon registration.

Students are highly encouraged to attend one of our biggest events of the year!

Congratulations to Mat Bunch, Meredith Marlier, Joe Salico, John Sauve, and Jennifer Taylory-Monteaguda Mora for a successful interview with Don Frick, one of the authors of The Seven Pillars of Student Leadership: Practicing the Wisdom of Leading by Serving (along with James W. Congratulations to you all on a successful project! Please check it out, as you will be in for quite a treat!
All MPA Students are Invited to Drawing Classes "Sketchy at Best"
Hi Everyone,

I’ve partnered with the School’s Wellness Committee to offer mindful drawing classes a couple of times per month. “Sketchy at Best” classes will be short, half-hour drawing exercises designed to work on some skills. Drawing is not hard, you just need some basic tools like pencils, pens, and paper—and it can also be very relaxing! There is no such thing as a bad drawing.

Drawing is an essential way to communicate. It’s also very personal, it’s kind of like handwriting in that the more you work on it, the more you are comfortable with it and the more your personality shines through. I’m also hoping it gives some of us who don’t work together an opportunity to meet a chat a bit in the online work environment.

The “Sketchy at Best” exercises will be offered via Zoom, and they’ll take place in the middle of the afternoon when most of us can use a short break. The next opportunity will take place as follows:

April 6, at 12:30-1 p.m. – Activity 2: Blind Contour Drawing of Yourself on Zoom (aka Drawing Yourself While Not Looking at Your Paper)

Please let me know (via your UNC email) if you are interested in attending—these two, or any others in the future—and I’ll send you the Zoom and meeting information. MPA Students are welcome to join in the fun! If we decide that “Sketchy at Best” is worthwhile, I’ll add more and different sessions.

Have a great weekend,

MPA Resources
Each Digest this term, we will highlight the various resources available to you as a Carolina student.
The Carolina Veterans Resource Center is available to all military-affiliated students at UNC. Check out events, trainings, scholarships, VA benefit resources, and more on their website. When they are available in person again, visit their resource center at 211 Branson Street.
Student emergency and hardship funds assist Carolina students by providing financial support when they need assistance with unexpected, unforeseen, and unavoidable emergency expenses surrounding situations such as accidents, illness, death of a family member, fire damage or need for temporary housing. Currently enrolled students may apply for funds when they have exhausted all other resources (credit card, payment plans, additional student aid, assistance from family/friends, other personal resources). This funding is not intended to reimburse for expenses that have already been paid, to serve as a debt diversion program, or to replace or supplement existing financial aid. If funds are granted, they do not have to be repaid. Further details can be found here.

Driven by the devastating natural and man-made disasters, COVID-19 pandemic, political and racial polarization, and the emergence of new and disruptive technologies, we are witnessing dramatic changes around the world that are increasingly challenging the viability of our government. The government around the world struggles to address the complex and emerging challenges and there have been increasing calls for rethinking the way government operates in our changing world. This symposium is an effort to explore the current and key challenges facing American public administration with a panel of prominent public administration scholars and discuss their implications and potential ways to address them.

The LGBTQ Center is partnering with other campus organizations to host Pride Week at Carolina from April 6th to 13th, 2021.

Pride Week at Carolina is a partnership between the LGBTQ Center, student organizations, University departments, and community organizations to host events that center themes of history, inclusion, intersectionality, expression, and advocacy within Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, and Asexual (LGBTIQA+) communities.

This year, the week will include over 20 events from collaborating sponsors who have pledged to:
  • ensure the affirmation of LGBTQIA+ individuals, especially those with multiple marginalized identities;
  • align with the LGBTQ Center's mission of fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for UNC-Chapel Hill community members of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions
  • plan using the principles of Universal Design, so that events will be accessible by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for individual adaptation
  • prioritize spaces and venues that have gender non-specific restrooms or allow temporary signage affirming the right for transgender people to use the restroom of their choice
  • ensure that planning for events center the input, voices, leadership, and experiences of people within the LGBTQ community

Event Schedule
The finalized schedule will be available along with asynchronous offerings at Tarheels.live/PrideWeek.

Accessibility
All LGBTQ Center-hosted Pride Week events will be available via Zoom with auto-captioning. All images and videos posted to the Pride Week website will include comprehensive image descriptions and/or transcripts. Due to a lack of funding, the LGBTQ Center will not provide live ASL interpretation or live visual descriptions.

If you require accommodations for any UNC-Chapel Hill LGBTQ Center events or programs, please contact us at least one week in advance.
