Student News: Adrienne Augustus
Adrienne Augustus is proud to announce A Beautiful Mind: The Foundation for Mental Health. The organization is a 501(c)(3) grantmaking public charity rooted in the knowledge that while the stigma linked to mental illness is beginning to wane, the support many people need to manage their symptoms is not always easy to access. This is especially true for people of color who face systemic, linguistic, and other culturally-specific challenges that often delay or prevent those in need from receiving proper mental health treatment. Please see an invitation below to A Beautiful Mind's Official Launch & Inaugural Fundraiser below.

Adrienne is the Founder and Board President. She is in the online format of the MPA Program. Congratulations, Adrienne, on making this dream become a reality!
Twenty three students and recent graduates from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have been selected to receive the Fulbright U.S. Student Program award for the 2019-2020 academic year, the highest number of recipients from UNC-Chapel Hill in one year.

Among them is Wad Khalafalla , MPA '18, who is teaching English in Malaysia. Congratulations, Wad!

The Fulbright announcement may be found here .
Are you the first in your family to pursue a graduate degree? How do you navigate the academy? Do others feel the same way as me? What does it look like to succeed as a first-generation graduate student? Join us for a diverse panel of faculty, staff, and students as they share their personal narratives as first-generation graduate students. Come prepared to engage with the panel in meaningful discussion. Lunch will be served immediately following the panel for continued conversation. Co-sponsored by the Carolina Grad Student F1RSTS (Diversity & Student Success in The Graduate School) and the School of Social Work.

This program provides an invaluable chance for students to learn from some of the most notable political practitioners, academics, and journalists in an informal setting.
Political practitioners immerse themselves in the Carolina community, drawing on the University’s intellectual resources while interacting with students and leading a not-for-credit study group.

The Institute is hosting two Visiting Fellows – Mayor Bill Bell and Secretary Phil Kirk – for the Fall 2019 semester.

Alicia Olatuja is known for her jazzy, soulful voice, which earned her a featured solo at President Barack Obama's 2013 inauguration. On October 2, she'll use that soul to celebrate the works of the most respected women artists of our generation. This intimate concert at UNC's Hill Hall will feature music by songwriters including Violetta Para, Imogen Heap, Joni Mitchell, and many others. Want a sneak peek at the music? Listen to Intuition: Songs From the Minds of Women on Spotify.
Wednesday, Oct. 2 | 7:30 PM | $37
While the full-day conference is sold out, some tickets remain for Ta-Nehisi Coates keynote appearance at Color of Education 2019 , his only NC stop on his book tour. To purchase tickets, please visit www.colorofeducation.org .

Award-winning author Ta-Nehisi Coates will headline Color of Education 2019 as part of his official book tour for his forthcoming novel “The Water Dancer” slated for release on September 24. In addition to a reading from his novel and a Q&A session with the audience, Coates will be joined on stage for an in-conversation with Dr. William “Sandy” Darity, Samuel DuBois Cook Professor of Public Policy at Duke University, about race in America.

Color of Education is a partnership of the Public School Forum of North Carolina, Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity at Duke University and Duke Policy Bridge at the Sanford School of Public Policy. The inaugural event in October 2018 featured New York Times Magazine reporter and MacArthur “Genius” Fellow Nikole Hannah-Jones.

Join the Sonja Haynes Stone Center on Thursday, September 19 at 7PM for the opening of DO or DIE: Affect, Ritual, Resistance . This multimedia exhibition by award-winning artist Fahamu Pecou seeks to elevate and recontextualize Black life and death by reframing our view. Pecou integrates West African spiritual traditions with African cultural retentions in hip-hop and the philosophy of “Negritude” to explore Black existence. This event is free and open to the public.

University Research Week is November 4-8
Exciting news! The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and the Office of Undergraduate Research will be co-hosting this year’s University Research Week, Nov 4-8, 2019. We are preparing a full, exciting week celebrating Carolina’s research excellence and highlighting opportunities designed to increase student participation in research activity.

All schools, departments and units are encouraged to participate by hosting organization-specific events geared toward the goals of the celebration. If you are planning an event (or have one already scheduled that fits with the theme) let us know about it here. We’ll include it in our promotions. We’d love to include as many events as possible to showcase the breadth and depth of research here at UNC. More events are being added daily to homepage, so check back often!
