This program provides an invaluable chance for students to learn from some of the most notable political practitioners, academics, and journalists in an informal setting.
Political practitioners immerse themselves in the Carolina community, drawing on the University’s intellectual resources while interacting with students and leading a not-for-credit study group.

The Institute is hosting two Visiting Fellows – Mayor Bill Bell and Secretary Phil Kirk – for the Fall 2019 semester.

Alicia Olatuja is known for her jazzy, soulful voice, which earned her a featured solo at President Barack Obama's 2013 inauguration. On October 2, she'll use that soul to celebrate the works of the most respected women artists of our generation. This intimate concert at UNC's Hill Hall will feature music by songwriters including Violetta Para, Imogen Heap, Joni Mitchell, and many others. Want a sneak peek at the music? Listen to Intuition: Songs From the Minds of Women on Spotify.

Students, faculty, staff, and post-doctoral fellows can receive individual support to assist them through the process of disclosing and exploring the impact of experiences, accessing support and resources, talking through options and decisions, and reporting to the University or law enforcement.
To learn more about resources and information about gender-based discrimination, harassment, sexual violence, interpersonal violence and stalking at UNC, please visit  safe.unc.edu .

Also, HAVEN is back with trainings this semester! HAVEN is a collaborative program by the Equal Opportunity and Compliance Office, the Carolina Women’s Center, the Office of Dean of Students, and Student Wellness. It provides students, faculty, staff, and postdoctoral fellows with skills and tools to better support someone who has experienced sexual or interpersonal violence or stalking. The training emphasizes the importance of listening, responding compassionately, and connecting survivors to resources on campus and in the community. Participants will receive a placard that can be displayed on their office door, residence hall room door, laptop, or backpack. This visibility of trained community members helps send a message to the campus that our community cares!

Please see the training dates below and click on the link to register. Graduate students are welcome to attend either the staff and faculty or student workshops.

Fall Dates for Students:

Animals and Social Welfare
Duke’s  Center for Law, Economics, and Public Policy  will be hosting a conference on “Animals and Social Welfare.”

November 1-2, 2019
Duke Law School
Room 4000

The conference will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, November 1, and 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 2. The conference schedule, with session times and paper titles, will be posted  here  when available.
The focus of the conference is how animal well-being should be incorporated into the normative frameworks of welfare economics. The standard frameworks (namely cost-benefit analysis and social welfare functions) focus exclusively on the well-being (usually, the preferences) of human persons. However, it is increasingly recognized by philosophers, and in wider social discourse, that non-human animals (or at least a subset thereof) also have ethical standing.
Conference participants include leading researchers from philosophy and economics. A current participant list may be found  here .
Duke faculty, staff, and graduate or professional students are welcome to attend all or part of the conference, as are those with an academic affiliation elsewhere. Those interested in attending, or with administrative questions, should contact Isabel Fox at  isabel.fox@law.duke.edu . For questions about the content of the conference, please contact Matthew Adler at  adler@law.duke.edu .
While the full-day conference is sold out, some tickets remain for Ta-Nehisi Coates keynote appearance at Color of Education 2019 , his only NC stop on his book tour. To purchase tickets, please visit www.colorofeducation.org .

Award-winning author Ta-Nehisi Coates will headline Color of Education 2019 as part of his official book tour for his forthcoming novel “The Water Dancer” slated for release on September 24. In addition to a reading from his novel and a Q&A session with the audience, Coates will be joined on stage for an in-conversation with Dr. William “Sandy” Darity, Samuel DuBois Cook Professor of Public Policy at Duke University, about race in America.

Color of Education is a partnership of the Public School Forum of North Carolina, Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity at Duke University and Duke Policy Bridge at the Sanford School of Public Policy. The inaugural event in October 2018 featured New York Times Magazine reporter and MacArthur “Genius” Fellow Nikole Hannah-Jones.

Join the Sonja Haynes Stone Center on Thursday, September 19 at 7PM for the opening of DO or DIE: Affect, Ritual, Resistance . This multimedia exhibition by award-winning artist Fahamu Pecou seeks to elevate and recontextualize Black life and death by reframing our view. Pecou integrates West African spiritual traditions with African cultural retentions in hip-hop and the philosophy of “Negritude” to explore Black existence. This event is free and open to the public.
University Research Week is November 4-8
Exciting news! The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and the Office of Undergraduate Research will be co-hosting this year’s University Research Week, Nov 4-8, 2019. We are preparing a full, exciting week celebrating Carolina’s research excellence and highlighting opportunities designed to increase student participation in research activity.

All schools, departments and units are encouraged to participate by hosting organization-specific events geared toward the goals of the celebration. If you are planning an event (or have one already scheduled that fits with the theme) let us know about it here. We’ll include it in our promotions. We’d love to include as many events as possible to showcase the breadth and depth of research here at UNC. More events are being added daily to homepage, so check back often!
