Carolina Nursing Dean Search Update

The search for the UNC School of Nursing's eighth dean is nearing its final stage! The search committee has wrapped up their initial interviews and announced that four finalists for the position will visit campus for public interviews in late February and early March.

Following these interviews, the search committee will request feedback from the campus community, and a final decision will be made later this spring. We look forward to introducing you to Carolina Nursing's next dean very soon!

The fifth annual Carolina giving day is March 29, 2022! We will be rallying Carolina Nursing Tar Heels near and far to participate and make a gift to the School of Nursing.

Wilmoth Serving as Interim Dean

Executive Vice Dean and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Peggy Wilmoth, PhD, MSS, RN, FAAN, became the UNC School of Nursing’s interim dean on January 1, 2022, following the retirement of Nena Peragallo Montano, DrPH, RN, FAAN. A national search for the School's next dean is underway with Dean Angela Kashuba from the Eshelman School of Pharmacy serving as chair of the search committee.

Michael Bury Receives GAA Distinguished Young Alumni Award

Michael Bury, MSN ’17 is a nurse, a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve and a full-time instructor on UNC’s School of Nursing faculty. This year students gave him the Unsung Hero Award.

The Reserve nursing unit he led was deployed to a New York City hospital in the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic in early April 2020, when not much was known about how coronavirus spread or how to keep it from being so deadly.

Jada Brooks Named Carol Morde Ross Distinguished Term Scholar

The goals of the Carol Morde Ross Distinguished Professorship in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing perfectly reflect Dr. Brooks’s background and the strengths of the School.

She is an associate professor and lead faculty of the PhD program at Carolina Nursing, and her research focuses on promoting environmental health equity in American Indian women.

Berry Family establishes Diane C. Berry Mentors Scholarship Fund

To honor the life and legacy of a beloved wife, mother and mentor, Grant Berry and Rebeckah Berry have established the Diane C. Berry Mentors Scholarship to provide full support for a PhD student at the SON, as well as the recipient’s faculty mentor. Diane Berry, PhD, ANP-BC, FAANP, FAAN, Jane Sox Monroe Distinguished Professor in Nursing, passed away unexpectedly on March 24, 2021.

Lineberger names Bryant assistant director of Cancer Research Training Coordination

UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center has appointed Ashley Leak Bryant, PhD, RN, OCN, FAAN, as assistant director of Cancer Research Training Education Coordination (CRTEC). Bryant joins Bernard Weissman, PhD, and Jen Jen Yeh, MD, co-associate directors of CRTEC.
