THANK YOU to the more than 150 Carolina Nursing alumni and friends who joined our challenge donors, Patty Horoho, BSN '82, Margaret Raynor, BSN '67, and Nicki Fry, BSN '01, and Jeremy Fry, DDS '03, to help us raise more than $162,000 on GiveUNC this year, proving once again that we have the best donors on campus! Your gifts help support our people and programs and ensure we can continue to uphold our mission to advance health for all.

The value of education was instilled in General Patricia “Patty” Dallas Horoho, BSN ’82, from a young age by her beloved grandfather and mother. Her grandfather, Eddie Tarone — who emigrated from Italy to the United States when he was 13 years old — emphasized that education is something that can never be taken away. That commitment to education inspired Horoho to establish the Josephine “Jo” Dallas Nursing Scholarship Fund at Carolina Nursing, in memory of her late mother.

We are delighted to share that Valerie Howard, vice dean for academic affairs and a clinical professor in the School of Nursing at Duke University, has been named dean of the School of Nursing, effective Aug. 1. Howard is a nationally recognized academic innovator and an accomplished higher education leader who will bring a wealth of experience to Carolina.

Deborah Flowers, MSN, RN, CPNP, SANE-A, SANE-P, who co-founded the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program at UNC Hospitals, received the 2022 National Crime Victims' Service Allied Professional Award, which is given by the Office for Crime Victims in the U.S. Department of Justice. (Article via UNC Health.)

Congratulations to Associate Professor Rhonda Lanning, DNP, CNM, LCCE, IBCLC, RN, the 2022 recipient of the Bill and Mary Lou Booth Community Service and Outreach Award. Lanning was selected for her proposal to support Birth Partners, the interdisciplinary service-learning professional birth doula course in the School of Nursing she developed and leads as the program director.
