Weekend Roundup!
It was another busy weekend for Carolina Velocity! Teams from every age group were in action over a soccer-filled Saturday and Sunday against the Lazers, SCS and Wayne County.

Notes From The Field:
The
U8 Liverpool
team won their first of two games. The players focused on positioning and delivered some great goals for the win.
U9 City
played excellent soccer, passing and moving the ball very well.
U11 White
also booked their first win of the season! We were very pleased with the effort and smart decision-making on the field.
CVFC ‘00
team were comfortable winners in a 5-0 win. Dillon Little controlled the game well in midfield and was the driving force that allowed the attacking players to flourish in front of goal.

Spring has sprung! More daylight means we can practice into the evening without field lighting. Starting April 1,
only teams that regularly practice at East Cary on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
are moving over to

Coach Barrie
,
CVFC Academy Director and coach. Barrie grew up playing soccer in the ultra-competitive, high-stakes English Academy system. Read about his incredible journey, and you’ll see why our kids are so fortunate to have a former player and coach of his caliber on our staff.
I started playing soccer when I was 5 years old, mostly just with my dad and friends from school. I quickly became obsessed with the sport. I always had a ball at my feet. My mom would get annoyed with me when I would take a ball around the grocery stores whilst she was shopping.
I began playing for my local club team when I was 8 years old. After a few weeks, I was asked to play up an age as I was a bit further ahead than the other boys on my team. I was always a small kid so by playing up against bigger boys was a good challenge for me, and the experience quickly toughened me up. Soon after, I was scouted and played for the
Watford FC Soccer Academy
. I trained three times a week at Watford and twice per week with my local club team. I played for my school team during the week before evening practices, then, I played for my local team on Saturdays and Watford on Sundays.
After 18 months, Watford offered me a 3-year Academy contract. During a club soccer tournament, I was scouted by Arsenal FC, and invited to the Arsenal stadium for practice the next week. After a 2-week trial I was offered a 3-year Academy contract with Arsenal. At the time, the
Arsenal Academy
was the best in the country, so I was excited for the opportunity! As happy as I was to play for Arsenal, the opportunity was a bittersweet tradeoff for me as a young kid because I could no longer play alongside my mates in my local club or my school team.
As soccer parents and coaches, we know all too well, the significant family commitment our sport requires. In my case, my Mum took me on the train to London four evenings a week. We met my Dad at Highbury train station as he worked around the area. I had two-hour practices 4 nights a week, and we played other Academy teams every weekend. I stayed at Arsenal for 6 years.
After leaving Arsenal at the age of 17, I played semi-professional soccer for
Stevenage FC
and then
Ware FC
. I took college courses and focused on earning my coaching licenses.
Growing up in a high-level, professional soccer environment was vital to my development as a player, and the experience significantly influenced my own work as a coach. I always said that when I stopped playing, I would love to coach, so that I can share my knowledge and experience, and have a positive impact on kids. Watching kids grow as players and as young people under my guidance, is a wonderful thing to be able to do.
Although I retired from playing very early (age 25), my love for coaching has always remained. My advice to our Carolina Velocity, FC players this week, is always the same. "Practice as you play. Practice with high intensity in order to improve all the time."
