Dear Carolina Velocity, FC Families,

Welcome back to another installment of our newsletter. Tryouts have begun, and it's been a great turnout. Please take a few minutes to read more about tryouts, and to see what's new this week at the club.
Velocity Tryouts Are in Full Swing!
We're off to a fantastic start with tryouts! Whoever said that tryouts are stressful for children, hasn't experienced our club. Coaches Barrie, James and Scotty ran an evening of fun games and skills challenges, engaging all of our new and returning players! The Academy kids strode off the field: dirty, sweaty, tired - with enormous smiles on their faces!
Tryouts Are Here!
Below you'll find the information you need for smooth sailing through tryouts.

  • Tryouts will be held at WakeMed Soccer Park.
  • $10 one-time registration fee
  • Your player must attend the session scheduled for his/her age group.
  • Try to attend more than one session. It helps coaches evaluate players together.
  • Invite a friend!
  • Remember to check your Field # and the Field Map before your arrive.
  • Players should arrive 30 minutes early to check in, to pick-up a practice jersey and to warm up.
  • Wear shin guards.
  • Bring a water bottle, a ball and a smile!
  • We look forward to seeing you!
Thank you to our Parent Volunteers!
A very big thank you to Aaron Gallagher, Jorja Pigott and Karen Ratliffe for volunteering to help at tryouts. Welcoming families, signing-in players and handing out shirts, frees up our coaches to do what they're best at...coaching and talking to parents. We appreciate our volunteers! Thanks again for taking the time out of your busy day to help our club.
Carolina Champions League
We are proud to be members of Carolina Champions League. The mission of this fast-growing league is to advance the game in North Carolina through collaboration and cooperation amongst soccer clubs. CCL is a diverse, competitive league focused on player development, healthy competition and creating a positive soccer community.
Save the Date!
In the Fall, all Carolina Velocity, FC teams will have the opportunity to play in Carolina Champions League tournament games at Bryan Multi Sports Complex in Goldsboro, NC. Velocity teams are scheduled to play September 7, October 12 and October 26. More details will follow in the upcoming weeks.
Soccer Profile
If you purchased a Soccer Profile account for your Velocity player during the 2018-2019 playing season, you will be given an extension on the use of that software for an additional season, at no cost to you.

We plan to utilize this excellent assessment tool much more this year. Your player can track their improvement and see their progress in areas such as ball mastery, dribbling, and other soccer fundamentals.

Soccer Profile helps identify player strengths and weaknesses, so that the coaches and players can work together to focus on areas of development that need work, and to maximize their practice and training time.

If you haven’t yet, and would like to set up a soccer profile account, please contact to request a Soccer Profile Team Invitation to get started.
Coaches Corner Staying Sharp
Summer break is on the horizon, and practices are coming to an end. Many of you have asked for suggestions on how your kids can keep their skills sharp over the break. So, we turned to our resident expert for some advice. U12 Reds Coach, Mathew Hooker, holds a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management, M.Ed in Exercise Science and a K-12 Physical Education License.

Mat’s answer…juggling! That’s right. Keepie-Uppie. It’s harder than it looks, folks, and there are huge benefits that players can gain from juggling. Here’s what Mat had to say about it.

“Juggling (aka Keepy Ups) is probably one of the most underused and undervalued training techniques in soccer. Many young players do not practice it because they get frustrated if they fail and/or they believe it’s a skill they will not need in a match. The latter is a fair point. However, juggling can help a player in many ways. Players who practice juggling frequently will gain more confidence with their first touch, improve their balance, improve their body control, and increase their overall technical skill.

Some tips for players when practicing juggling:

  1. Keep the ankle locked
  2. Curl the toe slightly
  3. Hit the ball with the laces
  4. Let the ball drop down LOW
  5. Swing leg from the knee, NOT hip.

Common mistakes made are:
  1. Using a backswing
  2. Kicking when the ball is too high
  3. Pointing the toe too far down/up resulting in the ball going forwards/backwards.

For beginners, I recommend starting by holding the ball in your hands and dropping the ball onto your foot. Then, kick it back up into your hands and catch it. Repeat this over and over trying to increase the number of kicks performed before the catch. Don’t forget to practice using the non-dominant foot as well.

More advanced players should place the ball on the ground and attempt to use their feet to begin. Also, these players should try to use various parts of the body when juggling, such as, thigh, chest, and head.

From the age of 12, I spent many hours in my backyard practicing juggling after school. I only wish that I had started younger.”

Great advice, Mat! Parents, you know what to do. When summer is in full swing and your child is looking for something to pass the time. Tell them to grab a ball and start juggling!
Academy End-Of-Season Potluck
The Academy held its end-of-season party last Friday night. It was a fantastic turnout. The kids had loads of fun, and many thanks to all of our parents and families for bringing and sharing SO.MUCH.FOOD. The bbq pulled-pork and the meatballs were two particular favorites! Huge thanks to Coach Barrie, Coach Scotty and Coach James for a great first season!
Lost and Found
LOST. One grey/black soft cooler that looks like an oversized lunchbox (likely Igloo brand). Blue ice packs inside. Cooler was inadvertently left at XL Sportsworld, Raleigh after the Academy Party on May 3rd. If found, please email so we can return the cooler to its rightful owner.
A Kind Word
As parents we are often quick to contact our coaches when there is a problem or a concern about our player. But, wouldn’t it be great if we were as diligent in communicating positive feedback to our coaches?

One Velocity family reached out to our Academy coaches to share a sweet story about how the coaches have inspired their child. The family was kind enough to allow us to share their email with you.

At 8 the game of soccer should be fun, whilst continuing to develop. We (and our son) have seen significant improvements in his ability and love seeing the smile on his face as he runs down the field. Both of those things are at least in part a result of your coaching.
Beyond the smile, how can you tell if a kid is enjoying the game? One potential way...
Last night our son got in his pjs and was ready for bed. He asked if he could read for a bit on his own before going to sleep. We, of course, said yes. About 20 mins later I went up to check on him and turn off the light if necessary (he sometimes falls asleep with it on). As I opened the door he was just walking to shut off the light. Busted! The look on his face was one of guilt as if his hand was caught in the cookie jar right before dinner. He had changed out of his pjs and into his full burgundy Velocity kit. I guess so he could dream about soccer?
Anyway, clearly he loves the game. Thanks for all you do!
Community Service
At Carolina Velocity, our job is not only to develop good soccer players, but to grow good human beings. Serving those in need, is one way our players can learn kindness, empathy and the importance of giving back to the community.

Carolina Velocity is partnering with Rise Against Hunger for a very unique service opportunity for our players. Rise Against Hunger distributes food aid through global partners that administer school feeding programs, orphanages, health clinics, vocational training and crisis response. Their goal is to wipe out world hunger by 2030.

On behalf of Rise Against Hunger, Carolina Velocity U11/U12 parents, Michelle and Allen Keitz are hosting a meal-packaging event for our club on June 8 from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the Rise Against Hunger Raleigh Warehouse 3200 Wellington Court suite 112, Raleigh, NC 27615.

This fun, educational event is a great way for our players and families to lend a hand to people in critical need across the globe. There will be music, stylish hairnets, educational stories, and an assembly line packaging process. The players will have hours of fun packaging meals and team

Our Club's goal is to raise $2,000 for this event.  Register your family to attend and also to make a donation. Can't make the event? No problem! Simply register to make a donation on behalf of our club. Don't Miss for this wonderful opportunity!
