2019 Reunions Winding Down

Class of 1974
Class of 1974

Over 80 alumnae joined their classmates to laugh, dance and enjoy a wonderful night together at Scott's in Walnut Creek.

The Class of 1979 also enjoyed a luncheon in the convent, visited the chapel and toured the campus.   For some, it had been decades since they last stepped foot on campus and many had never been in the convent!  It was a fun day for reconnecting.

New Tradition - WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
Alumnae Raffle Tree at Visions of Christmas
For 30 years, Carondelet alumnae have shown their support at Visions of Christmas. This year we want to stand out as an alumnae community by sponsoring an alumnae raffle tree. Sponsoring a tree entails selecting a theme, donating experiences, collecting gifts for under the tree and designing the overall look of the tree.

Do you have a vacation home or travel experience you would like to donate? A business you'd like to highlight? Tickets to concerts or sporting events? Or something creative that we could include with the tree.

We are looking for 3-4 alumnae to help in this effort, please contact me if you are interested 925-686-5353 x151 or aschiffenhaus@carondeleths.org.

This is an exciting new tradition for the alumnae community as we celebrate the 30th Annual Visions of Christmas.

Alumnae Spotlight - Beth Boyan Foraker '82

New feature: Alumna Spotlight

When Beth became a teacher, she had never learned alongside or taught a student with a significant disability. She had attended Catholic schools K-12, including Carondelet, but people with disabilities were shut out of the opportunity to learn in a Catholic environment. That all changed when her third child, Patrick, was born with Down Syndrome. Patrick had his two older siblings at St. James School in Davis and he wanted to go to school with them. Patrick was accepted to St. James and thrived, making all of his sacraments with his classmates and becoming a member of student council. Inclusion transformed the school! Today he attends George Mason University in an inclusive college program. Sadly, no Catholic colleges currently offer such an opportunity.

When Beth isn't working at UC Davis with beginning teachers, she runs a non-profit dedicated to helping all Catholic schools welcome all learners, even those with intellectual disabilities. The National Catholic Board on Full Inclusion offers support to both families and educators. It offers mentors at every grade level and educational research supporting inclusion. You can find out more here: www.fullinclusionforcatholicschools.org or on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram  @inclusionchick.

Inclusion IS possible in Catholic schools. Several Carondelet alums are working and supporting Catholic school inclusion. We'd love for you to join us!

Naming Opportunities
Still time to make your mark
Donor recognition at the I-Center is thoughtfully designed to highlight active partnerships between all members of the Carondelet community.

Naming opportunities include distinct spaces in and around the building and a prominent exterior donor monument. Recognition showcases gifts starting at $1,000, which may be made outright, or by multi-year pledge.

Please contact Summer Staino, Executive Director of Development.

Thank you.
Reflection

Louise Rousseau Gee '73

I have wonderful memories of my four years at Carondelet. I learned history and math. I learned how to study and organize my work. I learned more about my Faith and I learned about sisterhood. I made lifelong friends. I discovered that I wanted to study Biology and spend my life learning more.

My career journey started in Sister Linda's Bio class. Biology was definitely my favorite class despite the awful fruit flies and skeletons we used to study genetics and anatomy. Sister Linda recognized and appreciated my excitement, answered all my questions and encouraged me to ask more, and pushed me to learn material over and above the curriculum. She also took the time to get to know me as a student. One day, she asked what I'd like to study in college. When I shared that I was interested in nursing, she quickly advised against it in a sweetly positive manner. Sister was ready with some alternatives that mostly included Biology. She told me about a career in Clinical Lab Science, which I hadn't heard of. She provided lots of information and I became very interested. She stayed in touch while I was in college to encourage and gently push me forward.

After receiving a B.S. in Bio and participating in a one-year internship, I passed the licensure exam and began working. 41 years later, I'm still loving this job. I have work that matters, keeps my interest, and demands that I learn something new almost every day.

I think often of that semester in Bio and about the caring teacher who changed my life. I will always be grateful for the excellent education I received at Carondelet and the teachers who took the time to know and understand me and invest in my future. And I am energized that the young women attending Carondelet today will continue the legacy of exploration and lifelong learning that we are all fortunate to be a part of.

Alumnae Donors July - September 2019

Alumnae are an invaluable partner in establishing and nurturing a culture of philanthropy at Carondelet. You are our most effective ambassadors - products of the Carondelet experience whose adult lives inspire the young women who walk these halls every day.

Thank you  for using your voice and spirit to encourage others to join you in support of our shared institution.
