FARMER FOODSHARE
The Farmer Foodshare Donation Station program collects donations of fresh food and cash from
custo
mers at the Carrboro Farmers' Market. The money is used directly at the Market to purchase food from farmers. That food is then directly donated to those who are hungry in our community. The Carrboro Farmers' Market Donation Station is partnered with TABLE, IFC Food Pantry, Immigrant and Refugee Community Partnership, and PORCH.
Look for the Donation Station at the Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and visit www.farmerfoodshare

to find out how to volunteer!

Food Waste Drop Off Program
Market visitors can bring all of their food waste from home and drop it off at the Carrboro Compost Collection during Saturday Market hours! The Carrboro Farmers' Market, Orange County Solid Waste Management, and a team of compost monitor volunteers set up a collection site for visitors to drop off compostable food waste year round, every Saturday. This isn't your run of the mill backyard compost! The Compost Collection goes to a commercial composting company, Brooks Contractor, who accepts a wide range of materials. All food scraps and food related paper can be composted at the market, including fruits, vegetables, meat, fat, bones, and dairy products as well as soiled napkins, paper towels, and plates. Look for the sign, the cart, and bring us your food waste! No plastic, metal, UPC produce stickers, or other non-compostable items, please.
If you are interested in getting involved with compost collection and education, please contact Muriel Williman at
Muriel@orangecountync.gov.

Sunday, April 22nd is Earth Day!
There are many reasons that supporting the farmers' market also supports the health of the planet.
Did you know that all vendors at the Carrboro Farmers' Market are
located within 50 miles of Carrboro?
Local food purchased at the market doesn't travel nearly as far as store-bought produce, which means less fossil fuels are used to get it to your table. Food packaging at the farmers' market is also typically much more limited than what you find in the grocery store.
Celebrate Earth Day early with us on Saturday by shopping locally grown at the Carrboro Farmers' Market. Thank your farmers for being good stewards and don't forget your reusable grocery bags!
This week is also National Volunteer Week! We want to give a shout-out to all our wonderful volunteers at the
Carrboro Farmers' Market. From the Farmer Foodshare volunteers, to our energetic student volunteers, to our long-time special event volunteers, to the compost drop off volunteers, we are incredibly lucky to have such a diverse, committed group of volunteers that keep the market running. Thanks to each and every person who has ever given their time to the Carrboro Farmers' Market and its partner organizations! Interested in volunteering for the market? Sign-up for a shift
here or email
manager@carrborofarmersmarket.com to hear about our volunteer opportunities.
Guest vendor
Soul Cocina is joining us tomorrow with her delicious tamales and pasteles de yuca. We hope you will stop by between 7-Noon for a lovely spring day at the market.

Chapel Hill Creamery
Chapel Hill Creamery will be at Market!
Come to market for our handmade cheese, our farm raised beef, and whey fed pork. We have a few pork chops left and people love them. We also have bone in beef roasts as well as ground beef. Pork is from mixed heritage breed pigs fed nutritious whey from the cheese making. We have molasses cured bacon, ground pork, smoked ham hocks, and sausage including Chorizo, Breakfast, Mild Italian, and Polish. All animals are from our farm.
Pheta is back for the spring! Add it to the nice greens at market or crumble it onto pasta dishes, tabouli, or pizza. Other cheeses this week are Hickory Grove, Dairyland Farmers, Carolina Moon, and Calvander. Try melting the savory and supple Hickory Grove on a burger or in our recipe for turnip gratin. Dairyland Farmers is fresh, moist and tangy; good with crackers and hot pepper jelly, in our chopped salad recipe or in tacos with our Chorizo. Carolina Moon is like a creamy, rich Camembert and delicious served at room temperature. Calvander is our most aged cheese; it has a smooth texture with depth of flavor that goes well with a glass of red wine or shaved onto pasta or salads. Our Jersey herd is Animal Welfare Approved and we practice rotational grazing with a supplement of hay and non gmo grain. The beautiful golden color of the cheese comes from the carotene in the grass.
Get your tickets soon for the farm tour April 28 and 29 and come see what we do! A ticket is for each carload of visitors and is available at local co-ops or online here. We have brochures at our booth. Have a great weekend!

Backyard Edibles
Backyard edibles will be at Market!
Backyard Edibles will be at Market
on Saturday with more gorgeous tomato plants. After the sun we got this week they've grown even bigger. All our plants are sustainably grown from seed. They're strong, healthy, and ready to plant. This week we'll have Sun Golds, Sun Sugars, German Johnsons, Big Beef, Better Boy, Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, Roma, Peacevine, Kellogg's Breakfast, Brandywine, Juliette and more. We also have some herbs ready:
fennel, dill, catnip, and chamomile, to name a few. We still have some pretty kale.
And yes, we'll offer some peppers this week.
TOMATO PLANTING TIP: Remove first few small lower limbs. Set plant deep enough in the soil to cover that lower stem, giving it a few more inches from which to root. Those small hairs you see on the stem are root hairs, and they will spread, giving the plant more access to nutrients in the soil and a stronger anchor.
Hope to see you
this Saturday.

As the weather continues to warm and our fields become more and more fruitful the selection of vegetables available to you will increase.
Already we're able to bring a few things for the first time this year, and the star of the show this week is strawberries.
Be sure to come early if you want a taste because this week there won't be many and they'll be sure to go fast!
We'll also have a wide variety of greens including pea shoots, salad mix, arugula, lettuce, spinach and kale.
The weather should be beautiful

Mu Tar K'Paw will be at Market!
Mu Tar K'Paw means "everything comes from the sunlight" in the Karen language.
Tri Sa & Cingh Neam are both refugees from Burma.
They farm with their families at Transplanting Traditions Community Farm in Chapel Hill.
They specialize in growing the traditional crops that they grew back in Burma and during the summer you can find an array of tropical Asian vegetables and herbs. During the cooler months look for everything from broccoli to radishes.
They love to add edible flowers to their salad mix. They both farm without a tractor and follow all organic practices. Each year, they make beautiful trellises out of bamboo.

James Creek Ciderhouse/ James Creek Orchards
James Creek will not be at Market!
We will return to market on Saturday, April 28th
. We were disappointed to have our Apple Blossomtime Fest rained out, but it was the right call to make. The apple trees we planted
on Saturday
certainly enjoyed the rain, though, and the orchard is greening up nicely. That orchard fan is still busy with the occasional morning at 30F and 32F, but thankfully, the peaches seem to be holding on. We're blending up a couple new ciders, so stay posted. We've got two events coming up...Blue and Brews in Aberdeen 11-6 on April 21 and then the Cameron Antiques Fair on Saturday, May 5. Enjoy these beautiful spring days. Celebrate with cider. See you on the 28th
! Thank you!
