The Farmer Foodshare Donation Station program collects donations of fresh food and cash from customers at the Carrboro Farmers' Market. The money is used directly at the Market to purchase food from farmers. That food is then directly donated to those who are hungry in our community. The Carrboro Farmers' Market Donation Station is partnered with TABLE, IFC Food Pantry, Immigrant and Refugee Community Partnership, and PORCH.
Look for the Donation Station at the Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and visit

Food Waste Drop Off Program
Market visitors can bring all of their food waste from home and drop it off at the Carrboro Compost Collection during SaturdayMarket hours! The Carrboro Farmers' Market, Orange County Solid Waste Management, and a team of compost monitor volunteers set up a collection site for visitors to drop off compostable food waste year round, every Saturday. This isn't your run of the mill backyard compost! The Compost Collection goes to a commercial composting company, Brooks Contractor, who accepts a wide range of materials. All food scraps and food related paper can be composted at the market, including fruits, vegetables, meat, fat, bones, and dairy products as well as soiled napkins, paper towels, and plates. Look for the sign, the cart, and bring us your food waste! No plastic, metal, UPC produce stickers, or other non-compostable items, please.
If you are interested in getting involved with compost collection and education, please contact Muriel Williman at Muriel@orangecountync.gov.

Gardener's Corner -
Picking Watermelons
Name a food you tap on before you eat it? Watermelon of course, but what does the sound mean? Picking the perfectly ripe watermelon out of the patch is always a challenge but here are some tips.
1. Look for a change in color of the skin as watermelons blush when they ripen.
2. Examine the curled tendril where the stem meets the vine. It should be completely withered away.
3. Lift the melon up gently and examine the underside. There should be some yellowing where it sits on the ground.
4 Thump the melon and listen for a reverberation like your tapping a stretched spring. An under ripe melon will have a short high pitched sound and an overipe melon will have a dull thud. The more spring like sound you hear the sweeter the melon.
5. The final and best test is to tug gently on the stem to see if it separates from the vine. A ripe melon will "slip from the vine" with ease. If it does not slip off then give it a few more days

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
(From Celebrity Dairy)
*Blueberry Yum Yum*
3 cups blueberries
1 cup sugar
1 package raspberry jello
1 cup white grape juice
1/2 pound soft fresh goat cheese
2 tablespoons Gran Marnier or any orange flavored liquer
1. Bring the grape juice and sugar to a boil and add the Jello stirring to dissolve completely,
2. Add berries and let cool.
3. Whip the goat cheese and liquer together adding a bit of water to get a consistency that is easy to spread. Then spread this on the graham cracker crust.
4. Pour on the berry mixture over this and chill for at least four hours. Overnight is better.
5. Serve in pie-shaped pieces topped with whipped cream.

Chapel Hill Creamery
Chapel Hill Creamery will be at Market!
Fresh Mozzarella
this Saturday! Use for Caprese salad with tomatoes and basil or for melting with your favorite squashes or eggplant dishes. We will also have Dairyland Farmers cheese, Hickory Grove, Carolina Moon, and Pheta. The Dairyland Farmers is a fresh, unaged cheese that is moist and a little tart; use it on tomato sandwiches or in Chile Rellanos. Carolina Moon which is in the family of Camembert and Brie is a favorite for an appetizer.
Hickory Grove Cheese is our own recipe and has a luscious texture at room temperature and is fabulous for melting. Great for snacking or melting. Pheta adds punch to any dish whether it's tabouli, a green salad, or in our recipe of green beans and pheta. All our cheese comes from the milk of our Animal Welfare Approved cows, and since they are Jersey cows, we have rich, delicious milk to use for flavorful cheeses.
Our delicious ground beef is back! Add some Hickory Grove cheese for a wonderful cheeseburger. We also have bacon, spare ribs, ground pork, and Mild Country Breakfast sausage. Stop by for meat or cheese for your summer menu or a picnic. See you Saturday.

Saturday will be another FRESH CHICKEN morning at the Carrboro Farmers' Market. Michael will have coolers full of whole birds, all your favorite cuts, and plenty of organ meats too. We are celebrating that all of our potatoes are out of the ground.... our "potato barn" is now full with a number of excellent varieties.
