HURRICANE BERYL LEFT OPEN DOOR BAPTIST CHURCH DEVASTATED.

Open Door Baptist Church Damaged

Chris McAviney, Director of Disaster Relief for ORH, contacted Pastor Tyrone Polson of Open Door Baptist Church on the Island of Carriacou. In a written note, Pastor Polson sent this message about the resulting situation of Hurricane Beryl.

"Hi good day to you. I am so sorry for the communication problem that we face. The mobile network here on island have totally destroyed and they have since installed a temporary antenna to assist with ground operations. As such we are limited in what we can do in communicating with families or contacting folks off the island. The island is totally devastated with destruction everywhere. The building we've being renting for church is damage with roof blown off. We lost about 90% of sunday school materials, hymnals, bibles, etc. The church vehicle is damage and therefore I have no transport to go to the main port to get internet and wifi. Pls be praying for us as most folks don't have the provisions to get their homes rebuilt. My house is standing but received some structural damage especially to the foundation and to the roof. At present we are also assisting another family who lost everything. I will post some pictures soon. I tried calling but the connection is very poor."

John McPherson, dispatched to the Island by ORH, gave the following report by phone to Chris. Chris wrote the following about Open Door Baptist Church.

John has made contact with many members of Open Door. Those whose homes were built with wood have, by and large, lost their homes and they are living with relatives on the island whose homes were made of concrete blocks.

The inside of the church was greatly damaged because portions of the roof were lifted off of the building. The demolished trailer was the office for the church.

Pastor Polson's car was damaged preventing him from using it to help the islanders. John McPherson is making plans to get the vehicle moved to Grenada to get it repaired at the dealership.

ORH will be offering assistance to Pastor Polson and the families whose homes were damaged. Pray for the efforts to be successful.

2024 BOOT CAMP

BOOT CAMP READY FOR HELICOPTER SAFETY FLIGHTS

ORH conducts a boot camp the first full week of June each year the camps are necessary. The camps become necessary when young people between fourteen and eighteen are scheduled to travel on an upcoming ORH medical team. On the 2024 boot camp, teens were preparing for Bolivia and Guyana medical teams.

The first purpose of the boot camp is to help ORH and the teen to determine if the teen has the stamina necessary to complete the clinic ministry week. The next purpose is to determine if the teen is compliant with leadership and demands of ministry. The third purpose of the boot camp is to help the teen respect those that will come to the clinic days for help.

The camp is held outdoors in a rustic and remote setting offering the perfect venue for the purposes to be fulfilled. The physical demands can be exhausting which determines the teen's stamina. As tiredness and demand for performance take its toll on both worker and teen compliance can be observed. The teen also experiences outdoor life requiring new ways of living helping the teen to appreciate the world outside the normal overly developed living conditions

But the most important impact which the camp offers is exposure to traditional Christian service, traditional mission work, and medical missions. Without fail the hearts of young people are turned toward seeking God's will concerning serving Him. The 2024 team had several such decisions during the week. Teens choose to be considered for internships in medical missions with ORH. The internships are part of ORH's offerings beyond the medical teams.

Please, consider attending a boot camp so you can travel with ORH. The cost is $200. Teens will receive training from godly and professional medical missionaries challenging them to choose God's will for service.

Impromptu stretcher building and transport

Team work training to complete a task.

Stitching and triage training occurs during the week.

Building temporary structures for outdoor clinics is part of the training.

Water safety training provides experience in the water. The evening services were a blessing as hearts were being touched.
