NICHOLAS MESSINA '20

USNA Ship Selection

Port of Rota, Spain

Congratulations to 2020 graduate Nicholas Messina on his USNA Ship Selection!

The USNA Ship Selection is the culmination of the service assignment process for Naval Academy midshipmen assigned to serve as Surface Warfare Operators (SWOs) upon graduation and commissioning. As SWOs, they will be trained extensively to maintain and operate Navy ships and their systems, and lead divisions of their crew.

Midshipmen are called to select their ship based on their Overall Order of Merit, and their cumulative class rank based on academic, military, and physical standings within their class. Nicholas picked 7th and picked the Port of Rota, Spain. Upon graduation his ship, the USS Bulkeley DDG 84, is where he’ll report after graduate school at Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. #wearedefenders

DR. LENA' POWE MCDONALD '04

Associate Commissioner for Academic Relations

The Southeastern Conference

Dr. LeNa' Powe McDonald ('04), was the keynote speaker at 2024 JCCHS Black History Month Assembly on Wednesday, February 21. The assembly, organized by the JCCHS Heritage Panel, included music from the Birmingham Community Mass Choir, and special poem readings and video presentations.

From Dr. McDonald's speech at JCCHS:

"John Carroll, I challenge you to remember - you are writing history today. How you act, the kindness you show, and the ways you serve - these things become our shared history. These are the moments that write the story of tomorrow. Whether you realize it or not, you are writing tomorrow's story right now. So I ask each of you this question - what story are you writing with your life today?

What history are you creating now?"

Magic City Disco is a performance and parading group inspired by a love of the fund and groove of the 1970's and 1980's disco. WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

SEAN ALEXANDER '12

Actor

Since leaving John Carroll, I’ve continued my pursuit of acting. First graduating college before moving to Atlanta for an internship at Actor’s Express Theater Company. However, this was merely a stepping stone to moving up here in NYC, where I attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts Conservatory. I completed their program earning an AOC diploma and was accepted (via audition) into their 3rd year company program, where I continued training and performing shows. COVID hit right after which caused a major hindrance on my career path, but opened up new possibilities.

I continue to pursue stage and some film but have also started entering into the field of voiceover. Of recent note, I was in a site specific performance of Julius Caesar as Brutus, I have a reading for a new play on Jan 17 of this year, and I am finishing up work on my 3rd audiobook. I’ve cut back some to follow my other passion for the outdoors, but am still making moves up here in NYC. #weareachievers

CHARLES PETITTO

JCCHS Guidance Office

Many of you remember and love Charles Petitto who served the John Carroll community selflessly through the Guidance Department for almost 40 years (mid 1970's - mid 2010's).

Charles has been suffering physically and emotionally and is now in Memory Care at Proveer. Not surprisingly, a John Carroll graduate works there and Charles was her counselor when she was at John Carroll - so there is continuity in his life.

Charles has been diagnosed with Parkinson's but not formally with dementia. This would be a great time for him to hear what he means to you.

Please consider sending an email to his wife, Debbie, at arlington@arlingtonschool.net. She will print the emails and share them with Charles.

Charles can also receive mail at:

Sister Eleanor Harrison, O.S.B., spent 8 years serving John Carroll in various capacities including teaching math, moderating the Drama Club, organizing theatre productions, and serving as Assistant Principal. John Carroll was Sister Eleanor's first ministry assignment as a Sister and she was a beloved member of the faculty/staff.

JOHN CARROLL TODAY!

SYDNEY DRIGGERS '27

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception showcased the winning drawings of the 2022-2023 Missionary Childhood Association (MCA) Christmas Artwork Contest. This annual contest, a tradition since 1933, encourages children from elementary schools and religious education programs to express the joy of Christ's birth through art.

Congratulations to freshman Sydney Driggers for being selected as one of the grand prize winners. Sydney had her artwork featured on the official Christmas cards of The Pontifical Mission Societies (TPMS). These cards, bearing the essence of Christmas as seen through the eyes of children, were sent to thousands, including a special handwritten seasonal greeting to Pope Francis. - The One Voice (Dec. 2023) #wearecreative
