What does it mean to be blessed? The Bible uses the word "blessing" with deep Gospel implications. Psalm 128 reflects on how those journeying after the Lord are blessed IF they fear the Lord. The fear of the Lord describes what a right relationship with God looks like especially in the Psalms (ex. Psalm 85:9, Psalm 103:13, Psalm 103:17). When we step back to look at the Biblical story line, God pursues his people and blesses them abundantly.
Jesus' death and resurrection represent the full weight of God's blessing on humanity. But the expectation both for Israel and for Jesus' disciples was that the blessings of God would be carried out into the world. We see this in Psalm 128 in how the husband, wife, and kids all carry the blessing into the household. Likewise, the church family interacts and carries the blessing to one another and that blessing of a right relationship with God doesn't stop with God's family. We see that blessing further extend to generations and to the nations as represented by Israel. We are blessed in Jesus through the Gospel so we carry that blessing to the world.
