Cancellation of the 2026 In-Person Biennial Assembly
Beloved Obra Hispana and Disciples family,
With a pastoral heart and a deep sense of responsibility, I write to share an important and difficult decision regarding our 23rd Obra Hispana Biennial Assembly, originally scheduled to be held in person in 2026 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Due to the current immigration crisis in the United States and the unjust and aggressive enforcement practices that have disproportionately targeted Hispanic, Latino, and immigrant communities, travel has become unsafe for a significant portion of our congregations. Fear, persecution, violence, and, in many cases, the loss of life have created conditions in which we cannot responsibly ensure the safety, dignity, and well-being of our people.
For this reason and for this reason alone, the Obra Hispana Board has unanimously approved the cancellation of the in-person Biennial Assembly for 2026. This decision is not rooted in a lack of faith, commitment, or vision. It is a pastoral, ethical, and deeply spiritual decision, grounded in care for our communities.
Let us be clear: the Obra Hispana remains alive, united, and moving forward. We are one, even when circumstances require us to reimagine how we gather.
A leadership team is already meeting to develop a creative, innovative, and accessible plan for an Assembly experience that allows us to come together safely in new ways. We are envisioning opportunities to gather in identified locations in our convenciones, local churches, and even from our homes, ensuring that we can be connected no matter where we are.
Our Assembly theme remains a bold and living declaration of who we are:
“Somos Obra Now.”
Because the Obra does not stop.
Because the Obra is not confined to one place.
Because we are one, and God is at work among us here and now.
Because the Assembly is not an event, but all of us together.
We ask for your prayers, your trust, and your continued partnership as we faithfully discern what this next expression of Assembly will look like. More information will be shared soon as this vision continues to take shape.
With hope, love, and pastoral commitment,
Rev. Lori Tapia
