WELCOME BACK BEARS!
Today we already complete what has been a successful first two weeks of 2019-2020. As you will see below, our teachers and students have gotten off to a fast start this year. Thank you again to the members of the
Black Male Task Force for making the time to be on campus during Day 1. We are so fortunate to have a group of this caliber available to our young Bears.
Please keep in mind that there will be no school on Monday, September 2 due to the Labor Day holiday. If you have a student attending Carver this year, please also remember that we do firmly follow the
OCPS Student Code of Conduct as dictated by the School Board. You help in this area is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for looking over some of our early year "Bear Happenings" and enjoy your weekend!

IB Summer Camp
"Operation Moonbase"
In June we had a fantastic two-day IB Summer Camp for our upcoming Grade 6 IB students. Students carried out a range of activities and challenges in "Operation Moonbase" from building telecommunication towers to team games and presentations. It was a great opportunity for them to meet each other prior to the new school year and make new friends.
Welcome to all of our new IB students and families!

IB 8th Grade English with Dr. Palmer
Students in Dr. Palmer's IB 8th grade English Language Arts class work on reading sources for comprehension to develop a central idea. Students also recorded vocabulary words and their definitions before reading the source to assist in understanding the details.
* Please notice Dr. Palmer's "common board" where she has listed the agenda, standards and learning goals for the unit/lesson (very top image below).

Teacher Spotlight
Meet our new Reading Coach, Mr. Lundi!
|
|
|
Mr. Lundi, Reading Coach. Please note the time on the clock which helps to explain the Dunkin' Donuts coffee cup! |
Q: Hometown?
A: Bridgeport, CT
Q: What College/University did you graduate from?
A: UCF
Q: What subject are you teaching this year?
A: Reading Coach
Q: How long have you been teaching?
A; 8 years
Q: Most memorable teaching moment?
A: I was teaching my students the difference between tone and mood, which they were confusing. I pretended to get angry (I almost never get angry) at students not paying attention while I was teaching. I slammed things, yelled at them, and lost my cool, as they stared at me in absolute horror. Then I suddenly dropped the anger act and calmly said, "See? That's the difference between tone and mood: the tone of the author, me, is anger. The mood of the audience, you, is terror. Do you get it now?" They let out a huge sigh of relief, laughed about it for days, went and told their parents what a great lesson it was, and most importantly, did very well on the assessment.
Q: Favorite quote?
A: Alfred Toffle once said,
"The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn."
