Director, Case Comprehensive Cancer Center
|
|
Dear Cancer Center Community:
As President Barbara R. Snyder and Provost Ben Vinson III
announced Wednesday, I am honored to take on the responsibilities of serving you as dean of the CWRU School of Medicine (SOM) on an interim basis as of July 1, 2020, while maintaining my position as director of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center.
We are fortunate that our future rests on the legacy of accomplishments under the wonderful leadership of Dean Pamela Davis, and our exceptional institutions, facilities, and faculties that together comprise a remarkable medical education and research environment. The synergies of our scientists, educators and physicians are unique, and the collective quality of research, career development and medical care is unparalleled.
|
|
As a destination site for medical care, Cleveland is uniquely poised to promote collaborative efforts that are internationally recognized for innovation and quality. We will continue to build on our long history of discovery and enhancing scholarship across the university while focusing on high impact medical research. And through our hospital partners and faculties at those sites, we have established an exceptional and coordinated powerhouse of education, career development and translational research to better both patients and our community.
I am confident each of you will continue to
create and deliver medical breakthroughs and train the next generation of physicians and scientists, improving health both here and throughout the world. I look forward to pursuing our collective mission.

Recommended Reading: FY20 Budget Boosts Paylines for R01 Grants
|
|
"The recently approved federal budget for the current fiscal year includes a $297 million funding boost for the NCI, allowing it to fund more than 125 additional competing grants. Although the move reverses a decade of decreases in R01 paylines, competition for grants is expected to remain intense," writes the American Association for Cancer Research in a recent article.
The
Case Comprehensive Cancer Center's Associate Director for Basic Research,
Ruth Keri, PhD
weighed in on the budget boost and what it means for investigators. "The trend is certainly in the right direction, and it is safe to say that congressional bodies are highly supportive of cancer research. As scientists, we need to be wise about how we position ourselves to be competitive for the funding that is available,” says Keri.

University Hospitals Part of Study Showing Fast Breast MRIs Outperform 3D Mammograms at Finding Cancer in Dense Breasts
|
The study compared Fast Breast MRI, a 10-minute MRI exam, to 3-D mammography, in women with dense breasts, because the ability of mammography to detect breast cancer is limited in these women. University Hospitals was one of the sites that enrolled patients for the national study, which closed to new patients in the end of 2017.
Donna Plecha, MD, Chair of Radiology at University Hospitals and member of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center's Cancer Imaging Program, commented on the findings. "Our hope is that this study will help insurers see the benefit of the new test to improve early detection of breast cancer,” said Dr. Plecha.

Join Team Case CCC in VeloSano 2020!
|
The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center (Case CCC) is honored to make its sixth appearance in
VeloSano, a year-round fundraising initiative and "Bike to Cure" weekend to support lifesaving cancer research. Our continuing goal is to bring sustainable funding to cancer research by enlisting the passion and energy of thousands of people who wish to give back... including
YOU! We raised nearly $94,000 in 2019 and every dollar goes directly toward cancer research. In our six years of participation, more than $1,000,000 of VeloSano fundraising totals have come back to the Case CCC to award researchers as pilot funding for cancer research projects.
|
|
The Case CCC will provide complimentary registration fees and jerseys again this year. Contact team captains
Caroline El Sanadi or
Mary Wright for the registration fee waiver code to sign up! While registration is complimentary, all riders are responsible for meeting the minimum fundraising commitment associated with the
distance they ride. Fundraising can begin as soon as you register to ride and continues through October 1, 2020.
Registration is open now and information about volunteering for our cheer station and supporting our team through sponsorship will be available soon!
