Stan Gerson, MD
Director, Case Comprehensive Cancer Center
The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center (Case CCC), the remarkable powerhouse consortium of Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals and Cleveland Clinic, represents all cancer research and most of the cancer care in Northeast Ohio. Our membership includes 400 cancer investigators and over 6,000 cancer healthcare professionals. We support the lives of 15,000 new cancer cases each year, or about 70% of the cases that occur among the four million individuals in the region.
The Case CCC catchment area includes 15 counties in Northeast Ohio and we seek to understand and address the challenges across the diverse communities we serve. We care for traditionally underserved populations, which include African Americans in Cleveland, Akron and Youngstown, the rural areas of Ashtabula County and the Amish in Geauga County. Poverty is a major concern and a daily reality for many in these communities, linked to elevated levels of chronic stress, tobacco use and obesity. We continue to develop strategies to address these significant challenges and their impact on cancer risk.

16th Annual “The Race” 5K and 1-Mile Run raises $70,000 for cancer research at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center
Each year, “The Race” attracts thousands of participants to Legacy Village in Lyndhurst, OH on Mother’s Day, empowering children and families to make a difference in the lives of those touched by breast cancer by raising money and awareness for research and early detection. Originated in 2004 by Joshua and Danielle Berns, then 13 and 11 years old, respectively, the family-focused event is a tradition kept alive today by their parents, Jonathan and Patti Berns.
In 2019, “The Race” selected the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center (Case CCC) as the beneficiary of 100 percent of participant registration fees and donations as the event’s operating costs are covered by private donors. As a result of the event, the Case CCC received $70,000 in support of innovative breast cancer research. Jonathan and Patti Berns recently visited the Case CCC to present the funds to Director Stan Gerson, MD. Case CCC investigators are consistently working toward finding cancer cures, and thanks to “The Race” they will be supported through availability of new pilot grant awards. This year's Race will take place on Sunday, May 10, 2020 and once again benefit the research efforts of the Case CCC, the coordinating body for all major cancer research activities across Northeast Ohio.

United States Cancer Death Rate Drops - Case CCC Leaders Comment
Earlier this week,
the American Cancer Society published a study reviewing cancer incidence and mortality data and projecting numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in the United States in 2020 in an effort to estimate the contemporary cancer burden. Of particular note in the study, the cancer death rate experienced its largest decline to-date from 2016 to 2017, a fall of two-point-two percent.
Stan Gerson, MD, Director of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center and the National Center for Regenerative Medicine at Case Western Reserve University spoke with Cleveland's newsradio
WTAM 1100 regarding the findings. He noted that unhealthy food choices, alcohol use and obesity remain major causes of cancer, requiring more lifestyle changes from the public. Dr. Gerson also shared that much of rate decline can be attributed to immunotherapy which trains a person's immune system to fight cancer.
Ted Teknos, MD, President of the Seidman Cancer Center at University Hospitals,
also spoke to Cleveland's 19 News
about the encouraging data, noting that genetic therapy has been crucial to keeping patients alive.

"Cancer cells go to great lengths to sustain their growth, survival, and spread. Now scientists believe they have uncovered yet another way in which cancer cells may support their own uncontrolled growth. The findings, published November 27 in Cell, support a different way of thinking about cancer, said
Peter Scacheri, PhD, of Case Western Reserve University."
