Message from the Associate Director for Cancer Disparities Research
|
|
|
"When we talk about health disparities, we have to deal with the real issues." -Yvonka M. Hall, Executive Director, Northeast Ohio Black Health Coalition
On March 6, 2020, over 250 people convened in the state-of-the-art Tinkham Veale University Center on the Case Western Reserve University campus for the
4th Annual Cancer Disparities Symposium
“Cultivating Science and Community Engagement to Address Cancer Health Disparities." Cultivation is about promoting, fostering, nourishing, and working to make something better. This exemplifies what has occurred over the past four years in the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center (Case CCC) – our collective efforts to advance health disparities science have cultivated academic efforts to enhance our understanding of cancer-related disparities, and emphasized the importance of community engagement as a key component.
|
|
The presentations from each of our speakers served to educate, motivate, and inspire us all, providing models to carry forward. We welcomed researchers, clinicians, health professionals, community outreach groups, patient advocates, trainees, and key stakeholders from community-based organizations, local government, private foundations, and commercial businesses – across 14 states. We shared ideas and formed new connections. The energy in the room was persistent and engaging – and the concluding panel discussion challenged us to think deeper about both science and community.

COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus), your research program at CWRU and upcoming events across the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center
|
|
As spring break comes to a close today, Case Western Reserve University has
moved to remote delivery of education commencing Wednesday, March 18 following class closures Monday and Tuesday (March 16-17) and
issued restrictions pertaining to on-campus meetings, gatherings, and conferences. As of this time, other campus operations, including research, will continue.
The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center is working to establish virtual meetings where possible and maintain a
current calendar of events as meetings across our partner institutions are postponed, canceled, or made available virtually.
The Office of Research and Technology Management has also asked researchers to be prepared for the impact of the Novel Coronavirus might be on their research in various scenarios.

AI reveals differences in appearance of cancer tissue between racial populations
|
|
From
The Daily: Scientists at Case Western Reserve University are using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to reveal apparent cellular distinctions between black and white cancer patients, while also exploring potential racial bias in the rapidly developing field of AI.
Their most recent published research asserts that AI analysis of digitized images of cancer tissues reveals critical variations between black and white male prostate cancer patients. The work also suggests the new population-specific information—in addition to image detail on tissue slides also analyzed by computers—could substantially improve care for black patients with prostate cancer.

“On one level, we’re simply trying to understand and answer this question: Are there biological differences in the disease, in the cancer, that are a function of your ethnicity or your race?” said
Anant Madabhushi, MS, PhD the F. Alex Nason Professor II of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve and senior author on
a study published March 5 in Clinical Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. “In other words, is there something else going on that can’t be explained by other disparities? The answer appears to be, ‘yes.’”

Join Team Case CCC in VeloSano 2020!
|
The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center (Case CCC) is honored to make its sixth appearance in
VeloSano, a year-round fundraising initiative and "Bike to Cure" weekend to support lifesaving cancer research. Our continuing goal is to bring sustainable funding to cancer research by enlisting the passion and energy of thousands of people who wish to give back... including
YOU! We raised nearly $94,000 in 2019 and every dollar goes directly toward cancer research. In our six years of participation, more than $1,000,000 of VeloSano fundraising totals have come back to the Case CCC to award researchers as pilot funding for cancer research projects.
|
|
The Case CCC will provide complimentary registration fees and jerseys again this year. Contact team captains
Caroline El Sanadi or
Mary Wright for the registration fee waiver code to sign up! While registration is complimentary, all riders are responsible for meeting the minimum fundraising commitment associated with the
distance they ride. Fundraising can begin as soon as you register to ride and continues through October 1, 2020.
Registration is open now and information about volunteering for our cheer station and supporting our team through sponsorship will be available soon!

Parma Observer - Mar 1, 2020
“The data are clear that pancreatic surgery is best performed at high-volume centers to receive the best possible outcome,"
Jordan Winter, MD says. “However, many patients don't have the resources, connections or geographic proximity to find a specialist. We believe that pancreatic cancer is not only a medical urgency, but a psychologic and emotional emergency. Patients need access to a specialist quickly to get their questions answered and expedite evaluation and treatment."
