Trapl appointed Associate Director for Community Outreach and Engagement
|
I am pleased to announce the appointment of
Erika Trapl, PhD as Associate Director (AD) for Community Outreach and Engagement for the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center (Case CCC). This newly created role will oversee the broad interests and approaches taken by the Case CCC in all aspects of developing community-oriented engagements that have a goal of reducing the burden of cancer throughout our catchment area. Through Dr. Trapl’s leadership, the cancer center will focus on a very ambitious agenda through our members, research programs and community links to establish and coordinate best practices in cancer risk reduction, cancer prevention education and cancer screening, with special attention to vulnerable populations. We will encourage catchment-related research by our investigators for those cancers and risks that are viewed as excessive in our region.
|
|
Erika will chair the
Community Advisory Board and expand that group to include representation from social service entities, health departments and other representatives of our rural communities and regional cities including Lorain, Akron and Canton.
Erika is well suited for this Associate Director role. She has served as Co-Program Leader of the Case CCC’s
Cancer Prevention, Control and Population Research Program since 2019 and has been a cancer center member since 2013. She is an associate professor of population and quantitative health sciences and in February, was
named Director of the
Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods (PRCHN) at Case Western Reserve University, having served as Associate Director since its inception in 2009. Erika is trained in epidemiology with a focus on health behavior and statistical methodology. She has successfully facilitated and collaborated with large, multidisciplinary teams, including research teams, that have engaged community partners for most of her career.

COVID-19, your research program at CWRU and upcoming events across the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center
|
|
Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) has
moved to remote course delivery as of last week, in addition to
campus restrictions pertaining to on-campus meetings, gatherings, and conferences. CWRU has also transitioned every possible university function to remote operation to protect the health of the campus community during this rapidly expanding outbreak.
The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center (Case CCC) is continuing to establish virtual meetings where possible and maintain a
current calendar of events as meetings across our partner institutions are postponed, canceled, or made available virtually. At this time,
Case CCC Shared Resources are providing services in a manner that prioritizes safety of facility staff.
The Office of Research and Technology Management has also asked researchers to be prepared for the impact of the Novel Coronavirus might be on their research in various scenarios.
Latest information pertaining to research restrictions is available on the
CWRU Health Updates webpage.

Recommended Reading: COVID-19 Challenges Basic Researchers
|
|
"As COVID-19 cases have continued to surge, federal agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called for vigilant social distancing and quarantining to stop the spread. At cancer centers, that has left scientists engaged in basic research facing difficult decisions about which experiments to continue, while securing supplies and creating contingency plans for a complete shutdown," writes the American Association for Cancer Research in a recent article.
The
Case Comprehensive Cancer Center's (Case CCC) Associate Director for Basic Research,
Ruth Keri, PhD shares how researchers at the Case CCC are working in shifts, focused on essential experiements. "We are able to continue to do research, but we don't know how much longer that will happen," says Keri. "We take each day as it comes."

Join Team Case CCC in VeloSano 2020!
|
The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center (Case CCC) is honored to make its sixth appearance in
VeloSano, a year-round fundraising initiative and "Bike to Cure" weekend to support lifesaving cancer research. Our continuing goal is to bring sustainable funding to cancer research by enlisting the passion and energy of thousands of people who wish to give back... including
YOU! We raised nearly $94,000 in 2019 and every dollar goes directly toward cancer research. In our six years of participation, more than $1,000,000 of VeloSano fundraising totals have come back to the Case CCC to award researchers as pilot funding for cancer research projects.
|
|
The Case CCC will provide complimentary registration fees and jerseys again this year. Contact team captains
Caroline El Sanadi or
Mary Wright for the registration fee waiver code to sign up! While registration is complimentary, all riders are responsible for meeting the minimum fundraising commitment associated with the
distance they ride. Fundraising can begin as soon as you register to ride and continues through October 1, 2020.
Registration is open now and information about volunteering for our cheer station and supporting our team through sponsorship will be available soon!

Cancer Center Seminar Series
March 27, 12p
This week's cancer center seminar features
Stanley Huang, PhD presenting, "Stress Sensing and Metabolism of Macrophages in Tumor Immunity" at 12 pm today.
Dr. Huang is assistant professor of pathology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and a member of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center's Hematopoietic and Immune Cancer Biology Program.
His laboratory focuses on translational immunometabolism deciphering (1) how environmental cytokines, nutrient changes, unusual mediators and cellular signaling control and/or dictate macrophage development and fate in the tumor microenvironment; and (2) systematic interactions between innate immune cells and inflammatory diseases. Ultimately, the goal of his research is to harness and/or exploit the specific metabolic circuits to control immune cell responses and to provide better therapeutic efficacy for controlling cancer and other chronic diseases.
Due to
institutional health restrictions, the seminar will be available virtually via Zoom for the remainder of the series. Attendees will be muted upon entry and are encouraged to submit questions via chat or audio when appropriate.
Note: for best audio quality, we highly advise connecting to audio by phone using the toll number.

Cancer Center Seminar Series
April 3, 12p
Dr. Ting is associate staff at Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute and associate professor of molecular medicine and genetics and genome sciences at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Dr. Ting's research interests focus on epigenetic alterations in human cancers. The Ting laboratory has pioneered next-generation sequencing based DNA methylome assay and analysis and successfully applied these tools for studying genome-wide changes in DNA methylation patterns in prostate, colon and bladder cancers. Her group also leverages other genomic data types, including RNA-seq, polyadenylation site sequencing, and ChIP-seq to help contextualize findings in DNA methylation changes.
A member of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center's GU Malignancies program, Dr. Ting will present, "DNA Methylation at the Intersect of Chromatin Structure and Transcriptome Diversity."

The AACR-Bayer Stimulating Therapeutic Advances through Research Training (START) Grants will provide support to postdoctoral or clinical research fellows, combines research experiences in both an academic and industry setting, following a research timeline that will be of greatest benefit to the proposed work.
The training provided through this grants program will be invaluable to young investigators, by allowing fellows to attain a comprehensive research experience that will make them highly desirable to potential employers in either academic research or the pharmaceutical industry. Likewise, academic research centers and industry will benefit from the introduction of such dual-trained individuals into the field.
Each fellowship provides a
three-year grant of $225,000 to support the salary and benefits of the fellow while working on a mentored cancer research project. Research projects may be clinical or translational in nature and must have direct applicability and relevance to clinical translation and development in solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. Proposals focused on clinical research are highly encouraged. Applicants must plan to spend one year on site at a Bayer facility.
