Case Studies in Resilience

Puerto Rico's BoriCorps, funded by NOAA, provides young professionals in PR with job training and experience through restoring mangroves destroyed by Hurricane Maria.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection used data from NOAA’s Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP) for Florida's Statewide Flood Vulnerability Assessment.

University of North Carolina Wilmington professors are creating a documentary to celebrate resilience initiatives in North Carolina's Down East communities, highlighting resident voices.

An essay by Ocean Conservancy staff and Alaska native researchers explores what it looks like to put indigenous cultures at the heart of wildlife and fisheries management.

Mangrove destruction by Hurricanes Maria and Irma (2017) brought together Rookery Bay (Southwest Florida) and Jobos Bay (Puerto Rico) National Estuarine Research Reserves to assess mangrove recovery, leading to more holistic decision-making strategies for mangrove restoration and adaptive management.

United States Interagency Elevation Inventory: This catalog of publicly available, high-accuracy elevation data for the United States and its territories is collaboratively maintained by six federal partners. The inventory provides an important central location for information about elevation data sets and decreases duplicate data collection efforts.

Guide to Archived Federal Environmental Data, Tools & Websites: This is a guide to finding alternative places to access important environmental government data being removed from public online sources. The guide is focused on information relevant to the work that the Southern Environmental Law Center and its partners are doing to protect the air, water, land, wildlife, and people who live in the South. It will be updated as related new data sources go online.

Federal Environmental Justice Tracker from Harvard Law School: We track regulations, policies, and other federal actions that affect communities' exposure to environmental pollution, including public health protections for workers, pollution standards for air and water, and environmental enforcement priorities. We also track actions that affect the ability of impacted communities to participate in decisions that affect them, including changes in how agencies are structured and staffed, and current opportunities for public comment. We do not track federal funding, legislation, or actions specific to one state, tribe, or territory. We’ve also compiled a list of trackers from other organizations.

NOAA’s Sea Level Rise Viewer received a series of updates recently including:

  • Added ½ foot increments of sea level rise
  • Added U.S. Virgin Island and Puerto Rico visualizations–Puerto Rico for the first time!
  • Added the NOS moderate and major flood thresholds to the High Tide Flooding tab
  • Added observed extrapolations extended to 2050 (from the 2022 Sea Level Rise Technical Report)
  • Added one degree sea level rise projection grids (from 2022 Sea Level Rise Technical Report)

Climate Correction Podcast: Talking Climate Across the Aisle with Kathleen Biggins (Season 5, Episode 121)

Kathleen Biggins is the founder and president of C-Change Conversations, a nonprofit committed to fostering non-partisan, science-based conversations about climate change. Kathleen shares her journey from journalism and healthcare to climate communication, and how she and her bipartisan team developed the acclaimed C-Change Primer—an accessible, apolitical introduction to climate science that’s been presented to over 20,000 people across 32 states. We explore why bridging political divides is essential for meaningful climate action, how to talk about climate change around the kitchen table, and ways to engage skeptics using shared values like health, safety, and economic well-being.
