Our Transportation Department hauls MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) for Casella Waste from Menands Transfer Station just outside Albany NY.
Waste is hauled in on local garbage trucks and dumped at the transfer station. Once dumped, a loader and excavator reload the waste in our trailers to more efficiently make the long distance haul to the landfill.
The loads are brought to several different landfills in New York; most go to Chemung County Landfill in Lowman NY, Onterio County Landfill in Stanley NY, and Clinton County Landfill in Plattsburg NY.
Our drivers work hard, hauling 15-20 loads per week, ranging from 30-38 tons per load. Driver Curt Smith, our Pittsford Sleeper truck driver, operating Unit 7420: 2018 Kenworth T880/Sleeper, currently works this contract, staying out on the lane. Driver Jamie Hayes, operating Unit 8268: 2018 Kenworth T880/Sleeper, and Driver James Davis, operating Unit 7435: 2020 Kenworth T880/Sleeper work out of the Menands location.
We have 6 trailers designated for this contract:
- 7517: 2021 Titan Quad-Axle Tipper Trailer
- 7418: 2021 Titan Quad-Axle Tipper Trailer
- 7487: 2021 Titan Tri-Axle Tipper Trailer
- 7489: 2020 Titan Tri-Axle Tipper Trailer

Safety Topic: Confined Spaces
What is a confined space?
There are 3 questions that you need to ask yourself to be able to understand whether a location is a confined space:
- Are there limited openings for entry or exit?
- Was the space not designed for continuous human occupancy?
- Is the space large enough for your body to enter and conduct work?
If the answer to all 3 of these questions is yes, then the space you are about to work in is considered a confined space.
Once you have determined it is a confined space, everyone on the site should be notified and you should begin to look for potential hazards such as:
- Types of gases or vapors in the space (this can be measured with a gas monitor);
- Items that could obstruct your ability to exit the space; and
- If there is a chance you could become engulfed by liquids or solids.
If any hazards are found, everyone should exit the confined space and the hazard should be reported to the person who is in charge of the site for additional planning.

Please stay safe, and remember to actively care for people - AC4P! - by keeping an eye out for your co-workers, and speaking up if you see unsafe conditions.
