I am positive that anybody who is reading this will agree that this past week was the absolute pits.

I think we have well surpassed our desired rainfall requirements for this month and perhaps the next two...

We have reached the autumnal equinox aka the first day of fall. I read the other day that we are going to have a Godzilla-level El Nino this fall. I am unsure what that exactly entails, but I will hope for the best on that one.

In the meantime, fall might be getting chilly, but it is heating up with activities.

Cameron is dipping his toes in the coaching waters of cross country at Montini this fall. My motto is "give back to your sport". I am happy and proud that he has taken this on as both boys are always willing to help out when track and xc call!

We were lucky enough to attend a private event of Fright Fest at Six Flags last Friday evening as well as staying dry as the rain held off! Phew!

Am always happy that the American Eagle is still operational as this old gal is nostalgic for that old gal. I can feel her aches and pains myself sometimes!

However, the rest of the weekend was a meteorological Fright Fest for everyone at Six Flags and beyond. Took a lot of inner motivation to work on those projects that need attention before it gets too cold to tackle them.

The planters at both stores are still hanging on with the summer blooms as they have finally gotten a real break from those scorching summertime temps.

On the home front, Halloween is popping up all over. Our Gertie Goose has swapped her cow dress for a Frankenstein costume.

As we transition into fall at Casey's/Mike's, let us help you stay out of the kitchen and get you out the door for that football game, hayride, or the home-improvement project staring you down.

The Meating Place

Hot Wings

$6.22/lb.

As we kick off the football season, we are kicking off this week with hot wings. We do all the prep work, so you can just bake, serve, and watch the game.

This way, you don't miss any of the action. Although, given last week's performance, missing a quarter or two might make the game more enjoyable.

As Chicago sports fans realize, there might be some agony of defeat before we find the thrill of victory!

But a new week brings a fresh start. With hot wings and cold drinks in hand, you're guaranteed at least one "W".

Go Bears!

Bears' trainer prescribes hot wings for Caleb Williams' injury rehab.

We take it another step, and do the marinating for you. We offer different marinades at both locations.

Mike's Market: Classic Teriyaki which pairs perfect with pork. Barcelona which is tomato based, flavored with paprika and orange peel. Rosemary with olive oil and garlic for a Mediterranean twist.

Boar's Head Hard Salami

$10.81/lb.

This is a very straightforward product, one that has stood the test of time, and Boar's Head makes a really good one.

Salami is one of those meats that has existed for thousands of years. The practice of preserving meat using salt and air-drying goes back thousands of years.

But, did the Romans create salami, or do they just get the credit?

Archaeologists have found traces of prehistoric meat-salting and early forms of encased meats dating back to Ancient Egypt (during the reign of Ramses III) and Ancient Greece. Homer even mentions a meat, fat, and blood preparation in The Odyssey.

The Etruscans & Romans: In Italy, the Etruscans originally made early versions of salted wild boar and pork sausages to carry on long hunting trips (the origin of the Cacciatore, or "hunter-style" salami).

The Romans absorbed this knowledge, scaling it up to feed their vast military empires.

Cato the Elder wrote down one of the earliest recorded descriptions of the process, noting how pork was sliced, seasoned with salt, and hung to air-cure.

Since he wrote the recipe card, I guess the Romans do get the credit. In all fairness, a recipe in hieroglyphics would have proved difficult to transcribe at best!

Perhaps the recipe for salami sits on this pyramid wall?

Boar's Head Provolone Cheese

$8.52/lb.

Provolone cheese maybe responsible for uniting Italy by blending Southern Italian cheesemaking techniques with Northern Italy's abundant milk supply after the country's political unification in 1861.

The Unification of Traditions

Southern Roots: Provolone originated in Southern Italy (near Naples and Campania) as provola, a traditional pasta filata (stretched-curd or "spun paste") cheese.

Political Borders Fall: The

Risorgimento (a 19th-century political and social movement that united the separate states of the Italian Peninsula into a single nation) and the 1861 unification of Italy removed regional trade barriers and travel restrictions.

Moving North: Southern dairy entrepreneurs traveled north to the Po Valley—specifically the Lombardy and Veneto provinces like Cremona, Brescia, and Piacenza—which featured fertile land and plentiful dairy cattle.

A New Cheese Born: Southern cheesemakers taught northern artisans how to spin and stretch the curd. They scaled up the small southern provola into the larger provolone (meaning "large provola") using rich northern milk.

This culinary marriage created Provolone Valpadana, anchoring a traditionally southern technique in the north and spreading its consumption nationwide and creating a unified Italy!

Field Trip

Brooklyn, NY

Field Trip Snacks started in 2010 when three friends—Tom Donigan, Matt Levey, and Scott Fiesinger—began experimenting with jerky recipes in a New York apartment.

Their concept was sparked during a ski trip in Vermont, where they discovered artisanal jerky and saw potential for a cleaner, more flavorful snack alternative.

From those early recipe trials, Field Trip built a brand focused on snacks made without preservatives, MSG, corn syrup, or nitrates. Over time, the product line expanded beyond traditional beef jerky to include meat sticks, pork rinds, and other protein-rich options, all anchored in the same clean label philosophy.

Field Trip positions itself as a snack brand for active, on-the-go consumers who want bold flavor without compromise. Its roots in outdoor and trail culture continue to shape its brand identity and flavor innovations.

We still have our Oktoberfest brats if you're looking for something festive, fun, and different this weekend.
