A stock photo is a photo that is available to be licensed for a fee for reproduction use to various clients such as advertising agencies, corporate clients and editorial print ads.
Clients, by way of license receives permission to reproduce the photo for a specific use and time.
The usages that are licensed might be an illustration for a magazine article, a consumer ad, a calendar, magazine cover, greeting card or even a menu cover.
The actual photograph, negative or digital copy is on loan for reproduction purposes only and is returned to the stock photo company after use. Stock photographs are usually not sold outright.
Advertising agencies use photographs for a wide range of clients products or services in many types of ads. The best known uses for stock photos are consumer ads, which appear in publications circulated to the general public, and trade ads, which appear in publications directed to a particular industry, such as baby clothing companies, children or teen products, senior retirement communities, and numerous others.
Companies use stock photographs for annual reports, brochures and internal company magazines. Magazines and publisher uses stock photographs for books, book covers, magazines, and newspapers.
Auxiliary markets that use stock photos include a wide variety of uses, from calendars and greeting cards, to bank checks and T-shirts. In fact, these markets extend to every conceivable use a photo can have.
