Winter Fire Prevention:
Keeping Safe and Warm

Now that the cold winter months are upon us, more of our leisure time is being spent indoors so that we can keep safe and warm from the inclement weather.  Many families will be using their fireplaces, burning seasonal candles, and handling lights for decorating their homes at this time of year.  Additionally, people who smoke will be doing so indoors more frequently.  With all of these sources of heat and electric lighting, there comes the risk of devastating fires in homes and residential buildings. FEMA reported that half of all home heating fires occurred in December, January, and February and 53% of home heating fire deaths resulted from heating equipment placed too close to things that can burn.  It has also been reported by FEMA that cooking is the main cause of home fires and fire injuries.  By following the safety tips listed below, home fires can be prevented. Here are some fire prevention tips to help you and your insured stay safe and warm this season:
  • Make sure to keep plants, curtains, clothing, mattresses or any other material that could easily catch fire at least 3 feet from heat sources (fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, heating vents, etc).
  • Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that burns.
  • Replace damaged cords and outlets.
  • Refrain from smoking in bed and be sure that children do not have access to a lighter as mattress fires can occur easily and cause heavy damage.
  • Turn portable heaters off when leaving the room and/or purchase a heater with an automatic turn-off function.
  • When cooking indoors, turn pot handles towards the back of the stove, roll up your sleeves, and keep a pan lid or cookie sheet nearby to cover a pan that catches fire.

Thank you for your participation in judging our desk decorating contest! All of our contestants worked very hard to create the most festively decorated work spaces, but one desk came out on top.  And the winner is...
Lynn Marsh with her edible gingerbread house!
Great job, Lynn!
