Dear Bobcat Nation Families,
November is a great time of year to pause from our busy lives, take a moment to reflect, and be thankful.
Thank you for entrusting us with your Cats. It truly is wonderful showing up to work everyday to help shape the lives of over 2000 teenagers.
We are thankful for our Bobcat Family here at Cienega High School. Our teachers and staff are some of the most hardworking, dedicated, school-spirit filled people around. Working beside people we respect and trust is truly special and has made a difficult school year much easier to endure.
Each month we highlight information from our student handbook. I want you and your family to know that traditional school safety remains a priority for Cienega High School. We regularly practice a variety of safety drills, even during a pandemic. As a reminder for your family, below are the different safety drills we conduct throughout each school year.
· Shelter In Place
This is where we have NO movement throughout our campus but teaching and learning continue. Shelter In Place should not alarm students, staff or parents. Shelter In Place is simply a process where CHS Administration and authorities are investigating a potential situation and we need to limit movement across the campus.
· Lockdown
Students and staff are instructed to lockdown, barricade doors, and remain quiet. There is NO movement, no noise and no classroom instruction.
· Evacuation
Students and staff simply evacuate all buildings and exit to the perimeter of our school campus.
As always, thank you for your support and partnership in helping all of our students to be successful this school year.
I hope that you and your family are able to relax and have a Happy Thanksgiving.
Sincerely,
Kim Middleton
Principal

Hello Friends!
Now that all of the spooky stuff is being cleared out of the stores THE HOLIDAYS ARE UPON US!
One of the great traditions of the Cienega Key Club is decorating group homes for the holidays in early December. Each year we pack our sleigh with donated holiday decorations and deck the halls of these homes for kids that can’t be with their families for whatever reason.
To support this project we collect donations of ornaments, lights, garland, and whatever else gets the holiday spirts lifted from our club members, staff, and the community. If you would like to help us out please send donations into the Counseling Hub in the Peña Education Center where they will be collected by Mrs. Roberts and Mr. Erickson. Please note that we appreciate all donations, but we especially love the non-glass ornaments since they are the only ones that can be used at the house where the children have self-harm issues. We can also use those easy-to-forget decorating items…extension cords, ornament hooks, tape, etc.
Thank you all for the support over the years and a very early (some might say “premature”) Happy Holidays to you all!
Austin Taylor
Key Club President

As we transition into this season of Thanksgiving, let’s stop for a moment to consider the good that has come from this uncharacteristic year. More time in physical space with family? The opportunity to discover new ways, maybe more efficient ways of doing the things we do every day? Not taking life for granted, or the people in our lives that we have been blessed with? It’s easy to focus on the negative, the inconvenient, and the struggle of what this virus and quarantining have brought with them, but what if we modeled for our children that with every troublesome issue we are presented with, there is a silver lining if we are willing to stop, take a breath, and think about it for just a few minutes. If we live in a habit of being proactive instead of reactive, then even when the unforeseen rears its ugly head, we have the means to find and choose joy.
Here are some things students should currently be focusing on to prepare for life after high school:
Class of 2021 -
- Triple check with your counselor to determine if you need to be enrolled in an online or additional class in order to reach the requirements for graduation.
- Passing all classes needed for graduation.
- College applications should be filled out and sent in. Early decisions are already being made by the schools of your choice.
-
Scholarship applications are consistently due (some have already closed). If you want the money for school, tap into the millions of dollars being offered through local and national scholarship programs. https://vail.schoology.com/group/2642839167
- FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid - is open and available to students/families. DO NOT fall into the trap of believing you shouldn’t fill this out. Many scholarships and colleges require it in order to receive the money they are offering, even if you don’t qualify for any grants.
- Meet with our college advisor, Rosa Vasquez, to receive assistance with filling out any of the documents listed above. Appointment QR code below.
Class of 2022 -
- Double-check with your counselor to determine if you need to be enrolled in an online or additional class in order to reach the requirements for graduation.
- Create a spreadsheet of colleges you want to apply for in the summer before senior year. Early decisions are made in November and you’ll want to get those applications in sooner rather than later.
-
Create a spreadsheet of scholarships that you are eligible for and their deadlines. There are even scholarships available for juniors only, so it is not too soon to be looking for these financial aid opportunities. https://vail.schoology.com/group/2642839167
Class of 2023 -
- Remember that colleges and scholarships are going to be looking at your grades for all 4 years of high school. Be diligent about turning in your work and passing your classes with high marks to assist you with getting into the school of your dreams.
-
Check out and become familiar with the Cienega scholarship Schoology page: https://vail.schoology.com/group/2642839167. Start researching the criteria for these opportunities and get involved in the activities that are going to push you over the edge for earning them. Get involved in clubs, extracurricular activities, and community service! It looks great on these applications and sometimes makes all the difference.
- Start investigating colleges, trade schools, college majors, and career options. The sooner you focus on finding a future in what you love and are good at, the more prepared you will be to obtain it.
Class of 2024 -
- You have joined the ranks of high school at the strangest time of our recent history. Get your sea legs.
- Ask your teachers how you can improve your grades. This is self-advocating.
- Go to tutoring.
- Take advantage of intersession opportunities.
- Start investigating colleges, trade schools, college majors, and career options. The sooner you focus on finding a future in what you love and are good at, the more prepared you will be to obtain it.
- Join a club, activity, or team. Being connected on campus is the greatest gift you can give yourself for a more successful high school career.
The counselors in the HUB are here to assist you! Please reach out with any questions or concerns, and enjoy your Thanksgiving!

Attention Students:
If you or someone you know is living on their own, please reach out to your counselor. There may be resources available to you from the Youth On Their Own (YOTO) agency.
Youth On Their Own – a dropout prevention agency – strives to eliminate these barriers to education and empower Arizona’s homeless youth to stay in school. For over 30 years, we have supported the high school graduation of this unique demographic by providing financial assistance, basic human needs, and one-on-one guidance. With the help of our supporters nationwide, we have empowered over 16,000 homeless youth to remain in school and pursue opportunities for self-sufficiency.
Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns!
