Data Bytes: Who are Virginia’s Oral Health Workforce?
In order to invest in Virginia's future oral health workforce, it’s important to understand where we are NOW so we know where we need to go. That’s why the Future of Public Oral Health Data Workgroup is asking: what does the current oral health workforce look like now, as it relates to race, ethnicity, gender, region, etc.? And what can we realize from analyzing these trends?
Dr. Yetty Shobo of the Department of Health Professions Healthcare Workforce Data Center, and a member of the FPOH Data Workgroup, shared an overview of the dentistry and dental hygienist reports and dashboards. These resources include insights on the number of professionals, demographics, location, retirement plans, and more. Use this information for workforce planning initiatives locally and statewide.

Dental Providers Can Prevent Oral Cancer
April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, and 70% of oral and oropharyngeal cancers are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infections. The good news is that the HPV vaccine, usually given during adolescence, is an effective and widely available tool to prevent HPV-related cancers. Studies have shown that a recommendation from a healthcare provider is the strongest predictor of a parent’s acceptance of the HPV vaccine for their child.
Dental providers can increase vaccination rates and prevent cancer by sharing information about HPV and the HPV vaccine with patients. Learn more here, and see how to get involved with the Virginia HPV Immunization Taskforce.
