Morning Meeting Recap: Exploring Downtown, Experiencing Events, Enjoying Local Business, and Embracing Community

MainStreet Oceanside’s February 3rd Morning Meeting brought together business owners, community partners, nonprofits, and city representatives for a wide-ranging conversation about what’s happening downtown now—and what’s coming next. From signature events and cultural programming to new tools for navigating downtown and candid discussions about community care, the meeting reflected the many ways people Explore, Experience, Enjoy, and Embrace downtown Oceanside.

Experience: Signature Events That Bring Downtown to Life

Director Sean Chavez opened with updates on MainStreet’s upcoming events, starting with Taste of Spring, returning Saturday, March 21, bringing guests through downtown for tastings from local restaurants, breweries, and eateries. Tickets go on sale February 9, with options for single tickets, family packs, and new couples packs, making it easy for everyone to join the celebration of Oceanside's food scene. MainStreet is actively recruiting volunteers to help staff the event.

Attendees also heard a preview of the Oceanside International Film Festival (OIFF), presented by Lou Niles, volunteer Executive Director. Now in its 15th season, the festival runs February 21–28 and features international films, Surf Saturday, documentaries, and special events, including an opening night screening of Border Angels by a Vista filmmaker and a closing-night conversation with filmmaker Catherine Hardwicke. The multi-day event draws filmmakers, actors, and industry professionals from around the world to downtown Oceanside, creating both cultural energy and economic impact for local businesses.

Looking ahead, Chavez confirmed the 2026 Independence Parade will take place on Saturday, June 27, with an America 250 theme complemented by Oceanside’s local history. Planning is already underway for what is expected to be a full day of downtown activity.

Explore: New Tools for Discovering Downtown

One of the most anticipated updates was a first look at MainStreet’s new interactive digital downtown guide, an evolution of the former Discover Downtown magazine. Designed as a living, digital resource, the guide helps users explore downtown through interactive maps, walking tours, parking information, business listings, and curated experiences.

Organized around downtown’s “Four E’s”—Explore, Experience, Enjoy, and Embrace—the guide allows MainStreet to track engagement and update content quarterly. The guide is already being promoted through Visit Oceanside’s new Visitor Guide via a QR code, making it a first-touch experience for many visitors. Attendees were invited to explore the draft and provide feedback on future improvements.

Enjoy: Supporting Local Businesses and Economic Vitality

Chavez also announced the relaunch of MainStreet’s membership program for 2026. The updated program features simplified pricing and a renewed emphasis on business services, including workshops, newsletters, and practical training focused on tools such as online visibility and AI for small businesses. Membership is open to both in-district and out-of-district businesses, as well as individuals who want to support downtown.

The Oceanside Pacific Kiwanis Club—an MSO member and longtime community partner—is hosting a Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction fundraiser later this month. Tickets are $25 and support youth programs, scholarships, and service projects throughout Oceanside, and community members are encouraged to attend and show their support. Placemat advertising is also available for local businesses seeking community visibility during the event.

Additional announcements highlighted opportunities to support and celebrate local businesses, including Best of North County nominations, employment resources, and cost-saving programs related to utilities and sustainability.

Local Food Tours is celebrating 10 years of introducing residents and visitors to Oceanside’s culinary scene! The milestone highlights a decade of supporting downtown restaurants and small businesses while showcasing the city’s diverse flavors and local stories through guided tasting experiences.

Embrace: Arts, Culture, and Community Care

Arts and culture remain a central part of MainStreet’s work. Chavez shared updates on Art That Excites projects, including a new mural planned for the frequently tagged wall at Pier View Way and Coast Highway, additional window activations, and a Love Oceanside–themed art initiative. These projects are designed to activate vacant spaces, deter graffiti, and celebrate local creativity.

The meeting also recognized Rob Howard as the 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Community Service Award recipient for his longstanding contributions to the community. Howard will be formally honored again during the Oceanside Independence Parade. Howard shared updates from the Clean Energy Alliance, which provides residents and businesses with clean power options at competitive rates. The program offers multiple ways to reduce energy costs while increasing the share of renewable power in local electricity service.

One of the most substantive conversations of the morning came from Tameka Tates, the City of Oceanside’s Homeless Outreach Services Program Manager. Tates provided a data-driven overview of local homelessness, noting that seniors now represent the largest unhoused population in Oceanside. She outlined city programs including the Navigation Center, safe parking, family referrals through Interfaith, and coordinated outreach efforts.

The discussion that followed reflected both concern and commitment, with attendees asking questions about coordination, communication, and how businesses can respond effectively and compassionately. Chavez closed the segment by reaffirming MainStreet’s role as a connector and announced plans to host future workshops focused on practical guidance for downtown stakeholders.
