AAP Policy Statement Trauma-Informed Care in Child Health Systems
Recent progress in understanding the lifelong effects of early childhood adversities has clarified the need for an organized strategy to identify and intervene with children, adolescents, and families who may be at risk for maladaptive responses. Trauma-informed care (TIC) in child health care operationalizes the biological evidence of toxic stress with the insights of attachment and resilience to enhance health care delivery to mitigate the effects of trauma.

AAP Pediatricians Stand Firm on Masking For the 21/22 School Year
In recent weeks, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued guidelines for children heading back to the classroom for the 2021-22 school year. In the statement, they emphasized how critical it is for all eligible individuals ages 12 years and up to get vaccinated. The discouraging news is that only 25% of 12-15-year olds are fully vaccinated, yet the vast majority are headed back to in-person school. And the under-12 set do not yet have a firm day, month, or year for when they will be eligible to receive a vaccine.

Simone Biles’ Story From the Lens of HOPE
Her story offers profound illustrations of HOPE: ACEs, PCEs, and resilience. The New York Times published an insightful article about her life on Sunday, July 25. From the lens of HOPE, here is what we learned:

She has a high ACEs score. Her mother had a severe substance use problem. Simone suffered from food insecurity. Her home life was disrupted when she was placed in foster care. She was sexually abused as a teenager. This is her public story; there may well have been other issues growing up.

New Data Report: 264,000 Medi-Cal Beneficiaries Screened for ACEs
In July, the ACEs Aware initiative released “ACEs Aware Screening, Training, and Certification Progress: July 2021 Update.” This new data report details the number of Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) screenings conducted in California between January 1, 2020, and September 30, 2020, and the number of providers who completed the “Becoming ACEs Aware in California” online training between December 4, 2019, and March 31, 2021.
California Launches Largest Free School Lunch Program in U.S.
When classrooms in California reopen for the fall term, all 6.2 million public school students will have the option to eat school meals for free, regardless of their family’s income.

California Becomes First State to Fund Pilot Efforts in Universal Basic Income
Universal basic income was championed by Martin Luther King Jr., promoted by Silicon Valley citizens as the “social vaccine for the 21st century” and endorsed by 2016 presidential candidate Andrew Yang, but it has never really caught on.

California Makes It Easier For Low-Income Residents To Get and Keep Free Health Coverage
The 2021-22 state budget deal includes several provisions that will make it easier to get on and stay on Medi-Cal, including the elimination of the asset test. Everyone 50 and over will be eligible, regardless of immigration status. And new mothers will be allowed to remain on Medi-Cal for one year after giving birth, up from 60 days.
